Manchester United will reportedly have to shell out a sum of €40 million if they wish to sign David Carmo from SC Braga in the summer.

According to Portuguese publication A Bola (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United have been told that they will need to fork out a transfer fee of €40 million to secure the services of SC Braga defender David Carmo in the upcoming window.

Carmo has been with SC Braga since 2015, when he joined their youth setup from fellow Portuguese outfit AD Sanjoanense. Having risen through the ranks, he made his senior debut for the club in 2020. Since then, he has made impressive strides, although his progress has been thwarted by a serious injury that saw him miss a large chunk of the ongoing season.

Carmo has 55 appearances for Braga so far, 15 of which have come in the ongoing campaign. The 22-year-old returned from injury in February earlier this year and has since been a mainstay at the heart of the Braga defence. Despite his injury woes, the Portuguese defender remains in demand in the market, with Manchester United interested in signing him.

Manchester United are set for a major revamp in the summer as Erik ten Hag gets set to take charge of the team. The defensive department will likely be in for major surgery after some humiliating displays this season, including the 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion this past Saturday.

There are question marks raised over the future of club captain Harry Maguire, while both Eric Bailly and Phil Jones will also move on in search of regular game-time. With Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane also failing to impress, at least one new central defender is needed at Old Trafford come summer.

Carmo, to that end, has been identified as one of several targets by Manchester United. The 22-year-old is a towering defender with good ball-playing abilities. Given that he is just 22 and still has his best years in front of him, the Portuguese can be a good long-term prospect for the 20-time English champions.

However, Carmo’s contract with SC Braga runs until 2025, and the club are demanding a transfer fee of €40 million to offload the youngster in the upcoming summer transfer window. It remains to be seen if Manchester United are willing to meet that valuation. But with Tottenham reportedly negotiating to sign the defender, the Red Devils must act quickly if they are serious about signing Carmo.
