Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the clubs in contention to Barcelona’s defensive outcast Clement Lenglet.
According to a report from Fichajes, Barcelona are poised to offload Clement Lenglet in the upcoming summer transfer window. The French defender has fallen out of favour at Camp Nou, with Xavi Hernandez likely to cash in on him in favour of reinforcements in the defensive unit.
Tottenham Hotspur and Everton have been mooted as potential destinations for Lenglet. The defender’s current Barcelona contract expires in 2026, but that should not deter other clubs from making a move for the Frenchman, who has no future at the club and could be available for a cut-price deal this summer.
The report suggests Everton are one of the teams looking to incorporate Lenglet into their team sheet next season. The defence has been a major weakness for Frank Lampard’s men this season, and it appears the Englishman is prepared to shore up his options by signing a top-quality centre-back in the coming summer.
Everton have been linked with a move for Merih Demiral, but they are facing significant competition in the pursuit of the Turkish international. There are other options available for Lampard as well, but none perhaps match the credentials of Lenglet, who was one of Barcelona’s defensive lynchpins, not more than a year ago.
Tottenham are another potential destination for the French international this summer. The Lilywhites are currently in the market for defensive reinforcements, with Antonio Conte looking to add more competition for Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, while both Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez could be offloaded.
Lenglet fits the bill well for Tottenham due to his pedigree at the highest level of football, coupled with his technical brilliance, which could make him an ideal defensive partner for either Dier or Romero in the coming season.
Barcelona, for their part, are already preparing for life without Lenglet. They have reportedly agreed personal terms with Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen, who is set to join Barcelona on a free transfer later this summer.
The Catalan giants are on the verge of signing Cesar Azpilicueta as well, having offered the Spaniard a lucrative €13 million per season salary. The addition of these two quality centre-backs could pave the way for Lenglet to leave Barcelona, in favour of a new challenge elsewhere, possibly at Tottenham or Everton.
