Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are in contention to sign Jordan Pickford, who could leave Everton in the summer.
According to Talksport, Everton are ready to offload Jordan Pickford in the coming summer. The goalkeeper could consider leaving Goodison Park if the Toffees fail to preserve their top-flight status at the end of the season. Even with Everton remaining in the Premier League, coach Frank Lampard is fancying a sale for the star goalkeeper this summer.
Pickford’s uncertain future at Everton has put Tottenham Hotspur on red alert. Newcastle United are in contention to sign the Englishman as well, as he looks to take the next step in his career following a relatively successful spell at Goodison Park.
Formerly of Sunderland, Pickford had joined Everton in the summer of 2017. He didn’t take long settling into life at Goodison Park, becoming a first-choice goalkeeper in his maiden campaign. The goalkeeper has since racked up almost 200 competitive appearances for the Toffees, establishing himself as one of the finest in the league.
Over the years, Pickford has developed a reputation for his ability to produce crunch saves and his lightning quick reflexes. The 28-year-old has performed at a whole different level for England, having already won 43 caps for the national team. He is currently the first-choice ‘keeper for the Three Lions and is expected to start in the World Cup.
Before the World Cup, however, a change of club could be in the offing for Pickford, with Tottenham and Newcastle United mooted as potential destinations.
Newcastle United are looking to revamp their goalkeeping department in the summer, with Eddie Howe not convinced by his current options. However, they might not have much of a chance of signing Pickford due to his Sunderland roots. It is why they are scouring other alternatives in the market, with PSG superstar Keylor Navas being on the options.
Tottenham, though, could be a possible destination. The Lilywhites have no intention of retaining the services of Pierluigi Gollini in the coming season following an underwhelming first season at the club. Despite extending the contract of Hugo Lloris, the club are in the market for a new goalkeeper who can replace the Frenchman in the long run.
Tottenham have been closely linked with a move for West Bromwich star Sam Johnstone. But Pickford could be a safer bet due to his experience at the highest level of football coupled with his status as a first-choice goalkeeper for England.
Everton, for their part, have started their search for a replacement. Curiously, they are studying the possibility of signing Johnstone as well, so the exit of Pickford could indeed spark a transfer merry-go-round as we near the end of the season.
