Barcelona have reportedly been offered a chance to sign former La Masia trainee Sergi Canós, who plays for Premier League club Brentford.

According to SPORT, Barcelona have been offered an opportunity to sign former La Masia prospect and Brentford wing-back Sergi Canós in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Canós joined Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth setup in 2010 but left the club after just three years, opting to sign for Premier League giants Liverpool in 2013. Having risen through the ranks at Liverpool, the then-winger made his first-team debut for the Reds in May 2016 after returning from a loan spell at Brentford.

However, that proved to be his only senior appearance for Liverpool. Canós joined Norwich City in the subsequent summer but was with the club for just around six months, during which he featured six times. In January 2017, the 25-year-old signed for Brentford on a permanent transfer and has grown into a mainstay for the Bees.

While he was a versatile winger early in his career, Canós has transformed himself into a wing-back for Thomas Frank’s side and has done a solid job in his new position over the past couple of years. The Spaniard played a key role in Brentford earning promotion to the Premier League last season, and he has impressed in the top flight in the ongoing campaign.

Canós, so far in his career, has made 242 appearances for Brentford, scoring 35 goals and setting up 33 more. His contract with the Bees stands to expire in 2023, although the club have the option of extending it by another twelve months. Nevertheless, a move back to his boyhood club, Barcelona, could be on the cards this summer for the 25-year-old.

Barcelona are looking for reinforcements across the pitch this summer as Xavi Hernandez looks to build a strong team capable of toppling Real Madrid from their perch. The Catalans are in the market for a right-sided winger seeing as they do not wish to sign Adama Traore permanently.

At the same time, Ousmane Dembele is yet to sign a new contract and could leave when his current one expires in June. So, even though Barcelona are prioritising a move for Raphinha as a potential replacement, a second right-winger could come in handy. This is where Canós could enter the picture for the Blaugrana.

Even though he has played as a wing-back for Brentford, the 25-year-old is primarily a winger. And his versatility would make him even more valuable for Barcelona, considering that right-back Sergino Dest has been linked with an exit.

The report states that Canós would be available for a sum of just €10 million, which is likely to further appeal to the Catalan giants, given their financial woes. It now remains to be seen if they take up the opportunity to sign the former La Masia ace or explore other options.
