AC Milan will reportedly provide stiff competition to Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race to sign Riyad Mahrez in the summer.
According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Riyad Mahrez is the subject of interest from AC Milan over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Serie A giants have joined Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race to sign the Algerian attacker from Manchester City.
Riyad Mahrez has been one of the most enterprising players in the Premier League since arriving in England nearly eight years ago. The 31-year-old first made a splash with Leicester City, guiding the Foxes to an unprecedented Premier League title triumph. And he has been an excellent performer for Manchester City since joining the Citizens in July 2018.
Mahrez is Manchester City’s top scorer this season, amassing 23 goals and nine assists in 43 outings across all competitions. But the Algerian international faces an uncertain future at the Etihad, with his contract running out in a little over a year. Such a situation has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.
The interest from Barcelona stems from the uncertainties surrounding the future of Ousmane Dembele. While the Frenchman has been Barcelona’s best performer in 2022, his position remains precarious, as his contract will expire when the summer transfer window opens. The two parties are negotiating terms over a new contract, but it is unclear if the Blaugrana will tie him down to a new deal in time.
As for Real Madrid, with Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio’s futures up in the air, the need to bolster the attack irrespective of signing Kylian Mbappe has cropped up. To that end, Mahrez is a viable target for Real Madrid, with the 31-year-old potentially boosting Los Blancos’ goalscoring and creative ranks.
Meanwhile, AC Milan could also be in the hunt to land Mahrez, even though they are heavily linked with Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio. But with the Merengues keen on securing the Spaniard’s long-term future, the Serie A giants need to keep their options open. Mahrez is thus the ideal man to bolster the right-wing berth.
Apart from Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also linked with the Manchester City attacker. So with the race to sign the 31-year-old heating up, it will be interesting to see where he ends up when the summer transfer window opens.
