Liverpool will reportedly tough it out with Manchester United and Tottenham for the signing of RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer in the summer.

According to Kicker Magazine, as relayed by Inside Futbol, Liverpool have entered the race to sign Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig. The 24-year-old is also a transfer target for the Reds’ Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham.

A product of the Red Bull Salzburg youth academy, Laimer made close to 80 appearances for the Austrian giants before signing for RB Leipzig in 2017. The 24-year-old has grown into a mainstay in the middle of the park for the Bundesliga club, racking up 154 appearances, in which he has 11 goals and 18 assists.

Laimer is a versatile operator who can do the job in multiple positions in midfield and even play as a right wing-back if needed. The Austrian international is known for his work rate and athleticism, while he also backs it up with good technical ability. These qualities have made the 24-year-old an attractive prospect for clubs across Europe, including Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham.

Liverpool will need to start building their midfield department for the future as Jordan Henderson and James Milner are well into their thirties. Question marks remain over the future of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Harvey Elliott has shown great adaptability to present himself as an option in the middle of the park. But an established player like Laimer would add more quality to Jurgen Klopp’s roster.

However, Liverpool would have to battle arch-rivals Manchester United for Laimer’s signing. The Red Devils are eyeing a major revamp in the summer as they begin a new era under Erik ten Hag next summer. Midfield is an area they need to reinforce with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic set to depart. To that end, Laimer has emerged as a prospective target, although a host of other players have been linked.

Tottenham are also on the hunt to sign Laimer in the summer. The Lilywhites added more steel to their midfielder unit with the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur in January. However, Harry Winks is likely to leave at the end of the season. They would also need to replace Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, who left on loan in January and are expected to depart permanently in the summer.

All three Premier League clubs are yet to make an approach for Laimer. He will enter the final year of his contract with RB Leipzig at the end of the season. So, an exit could be on the cards. And it will be interesting to see if Liverpool, Manchester United or Tottenham launch an attempt to sign Laimer or look at other alternatives.
