Manchester City join race to sign Alex Lowry

Manchester City are reportedly in the market for Rangers whizkid Alex Lowry, with Newcastle United also involved in the race.

According to a report from Football Insider, Manchester City have entered the fray in the race to sign Alex Lowry. The Rangers prodigy is attracting a lot of eyebrows following his breakthrough, with many regarding him as one of the most talented players to come out of the club’s youth academy in recent years.

The report suggests Manchester City have initiated discussions surrounding Lowry’s potential move to the Etihad in the summer. They have been tracking the youngster for quite some time and are aware of his interest. Aside from the English champions, Lowry is also a target for Newcastle United.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Lowry is a dynamic playmaker who has shown immense potential in the Scottish youth leagues over the past couple of years. In addition to his skill on the ball, the 18-year-old is extremely versatile as he can operate out wide and even as a false nine if required.

Such qualities have made Lowry a sought-after prospect for many clubs across the UK, including his parent club Rangers. The Gers are desperate to keep hold of the youngster and have recently offered him a £5,000-a-week contract in an attempt to prolong his stay at the Ibrox.

Rangers have lost quite a lot of youth players in the recent past, so they are trying everything they can to keep hold of Lowry, who can prove to be a useful alternative for someone like Ryan Kent next season.

However, it remains to be seen whether they can fend off interest from Manchester City. The English champions have a world-class youth facility, which can certainly entice the 18-year-old. The youngster can also earn a far more lucrative contract at the Etihad, although he may find it infinitely more difficult to become a first-team regular at Manchester City.

That is where Newcastle United could prove to be a useful alternative, as far as Lowry is concerned. The Magpies are looking to build their team around proven stars next season, but they are also open to signing youth players with potential.
