Manchester United are weighing up a summer bid for River Plate’s in-demand midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

According to a report from TyC Sports, Manchester United are keeping close tabs on the progress of Enzo Fernandez. They have been scouting him for a few games now and are expected to be in attendance once again in River Plate’s upcoming game against Fortaleza in Copa Libertadores.

There is definite interest from the Man United, with the report even suggesting that the Red Devils are weighing up a summer bid for the River Plate midfielder. Fernandez’s current contract at River Plate doesn’t expire until 2025, but the player has a release clause of just €20 million that can be triggered in the summer.

Born in San Martin, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Fernandez rose to prominence during his short loan spell at Defensa. Since returning to River Plate last year, he has become a crucial member of the team’s midfield unit, notably racking up 20 league appearances in 2021.

A central midfielder by trade, Fernandez has earned a solid reputation for being a combative presence on the pitch, whose work ethic makes him a useful asset in the second line of press. His success at River Plate hasn’t gone unnoticed either, with Manchester City among the clubs interested in his services.

The Cityzens, who have also signed fellow River Plate star Julian Alvarez, could face stiff competition from their cross-town rivals Manchester United, in the pursuit of Fernandez.

As mentioned earlier, the Red Devils are keeping a close eye on the 21-year-old’s development. It appears they consider the Argentine as a potential long-term replacement for Nemanja Matic. The club are also bracing themselves for life without Paul Pogba, whose current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to PSG, and his exit could pave the way for someone like Enzo Fernandez to join the ranks at Manchester United. The 21-year-old might not be an established option, but he could potentially thrive under Erik ten Hag, a coach known for his ability to nurture young talents.

A release clause of just €20 million is quite reasonable for a player who has shown tremendous potential in the Argentine top-flight and even in Copa Libertadores. Enzo Fernandez, therefore, could prove to be a shrewd option for any European giants, and with both Manchester clubs competing, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Argentine this summer.
