Chelsea, Manchester United, PSG lead race to sign Darwin Nunez

Manchester United, Chelsea and PSG are reportedly reportedly in pole position to sign SL Benfica’s in-demand forward Darwin Nunez.

A recent report from The Athletic has offered an update on the future of Darwin Nunez. Many expect the forward to take the next step in his career after making a big breakthrough in European football this season. SL Benfica themselves are open to selling the star player if any club are willing to match their €70 million demands.

Manchester United, Chelsea and PSG are currently the three clubs in contention to sign Nunez. All of them have the financial firepower to pull off the deal, with Manchester United, in particular, looking to make yet another big investment after a disappointing 2021/22 campaign.

The Red Devils are expected to offload Edinson Cavani in the summer whereas Marcus Rashford could leave Old Trafford as well, amid interest from several other English clubs including Liverpool. The addition of Nunez, to that end, could prove to be a smart investment for Manchester United as he has shown immense promise at Benfica and has the time to develop into an attacking asset for any club in Europe.

Another club in contention to sign the Uruguayan international are Chelsea. The Blues are currently under a transfer embargo in light of Roman Abramovich’s sanction by the UK government.

Chelsea, though, aim to resolve their ownership issues by the end of the season. They are intent on making a few big investments in the summer, especially in the attacking unit where both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner may leave the club.

Speaking of Lukaku, PSG have registered interest in the Chelsea striker. But in Darwin Nunez, they could find themselves a raw talent, who has shown immense promise at the highest level of football and has the potential to become one of the best in the world in the years to come.

Nunez is also much more technically astute than Lukaku, meaning he is likelier to combine well with Lionel Messi and Neymar in the final third. And given his explosive pace, the youngster could indeed add a new dimension to the PSG frontline next season, though it remains to be seen whether the Parisian juggernaut can compete with Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign the €70 million-rated Uruguayan international.
