Arsenal battle AC Milan for Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio

Arsenal will reportedly wage a battle with Serie A giants AC Milan in the race to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, the race to sign Marco Asensio keeps heating up. The Real Madrid forward has emerged on the radar of Arsenal, with Serie A giants AC Milan also keen on securing his services in the summer transfer window.

Marco Asensio has enjoyed a decent 2021/22 campaign after a tough first full season following his recovery from a long-term knee injury in the 2020/21 season. But the Spaniard has also had to endure some frustrations, as he has not nailed down the right-wing berth despite several impressive performances.

The 26-year-old has a tally of ten goals and one assist in 34 appearances across all competitions. But the Spanish international is reportedly contemplating his future at Real Madrid, who will be in a spot of bother as his contract runs out in a little over a year. Such a situation has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, including Arsenal and AC Milan.

The interest from Arsenal stems from the rampant uncertainties surrounding the future of Nicolas Pepe. The Ivory Coast international has become a bit-part player this season due to his blow hot blow cold performances and the advent of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe.

Arsenal might need to invest in a wide-attacker if Pepe departs from the Emirates in the summer transfer window, making Asensio a viable target. But the Gunners face stiff competition from Serie A giants AC Milan in the race to sign the Real Madrid forward.

AC Milan will benefit from signing a top-class forward like Asensio to take the next step in the evolution of their squad. The Real Madrid attacker will be an upgrade on Alexis Saelemaekers and Junior Messias, making him an attractive target. But the Serie A giants could have second thoughts about pursuing him due to his wage demands.

Real Madrid would prefer tying Asensio down to a bumper new contract, but negotiations have not progressed smoothly. Arsenal and AC Milan will thus fancy their chances of snapping up the Spanish international heading into the summer transfer window.
