Barcelona rule out signing Mohamed Salah

Barcelona’s pursuit of Mohamed Salah has ended, with the Catalan giants reportedly ruling out signing the Liverpool forward.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Javier Miguel, Barcelona will not make a move for Mohamed Salah in the summer transfer window. Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski remain the priority targets for the Catalan giants, with the Liverpool forward no longer an option for them.

Mohamed Salah has transformed into a world-class attacker since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in July 2017. The Egyptian international was once a player brimming with potential without the desired output but has become a prolific forward in the last four and a half years, leading the charge for Liverpool season after season.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed an unforgettable 2021/22 campaign thus far, amassing 28 goals and ten assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. But Salah’s precarious contract situation has left Liverpool sweating over his long-term future while capturing the attention of Barcelona.

Barcelona will delve into the market for a prolific attacker in the summer transfer window as they continue their efforts to fill the void left by the departure of Lionel Messi last summer. While Xavi Hernandez has overseen a brilliant transformation of Barcelona’s gameplay, the Blaugrana can still do with a top-class forward.

Salah has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with the Liverpool forward being as close to a like-for-like replacement for Messi as any. But Barcelona always had an uphill task in front of them as Liverpool had been unwilling to sell the 29-year-old, even though the two parties were not close to reaching an agreement over a renewal.

That scare has been put to rest this week, with recent reports claiming that Salah is on the brink of penning a bumper new contract with Liverpool. That has come in conjunction with Barcelona ruling out the pursuit of the Egyptian forward, with Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski their priority targets.

But with Haaland also pursued by Real Madrid and Manchester City, Lewandowski will likely be the forward to bolster Barcelona’s attack in the summer transfer window. For now, it looks like Salah will be staying put at Liverpool instead of joining Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
