Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to make a summer swoop for in-demand League One defender Luke McNally.
According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a summer move for Luke McNally. The 22-year-old Oxford United defender has emerged as one of the most in-demand players in the third division of English football, with many expecting him to make the move to the top flight in the summer.
The report suggests Tottenham have recently made a £2 million bid to prise him out of Oxford United. The north London giants face stiff competition in the pursuit of the 22-year-old defender, but they are more than capable of blowing them out of the water thanks to their financial superiority.
Formerly of St. Pats in Ireland, McNally moved to Oxford United at the start of last year. And in just over one year, he has become a vital cog in the club’s defensive unit, racking up 28 competitive appearances.
Standing at 1.84m, McNally has been an ever-present figure in Oxford United’s backline this term. His defensive contributions have helped his team remain in contention for a top-three finish in the league.
The 22-year-old’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with even Tottenham Hotspur emerging as a potential destination for the young Irishman. The Londoners feel the youngster has what it takes to make an impact at the highest level of football, though he is unlikely to be drafted into the senior team from the get-go.
Tottenham’s interest in McNally stems from the uncertainty surrounding the future of Joe Rodon. The Welshman is intent on leaving the club in search of regular game-time. The same can be said for Japhet Tanganga, who has struggled with injuries.
The potential addition of Luke McNally could give Antonio Conte an interesting alternative for the first-choice defensive options such as Cristian Romero and Eric Dier. While the Irish defender is far from a finished product, his work ethic in defence, coupled with his athleticism, could make him an excellent cog in defence for Conte’s setup at Tottenham.
As far as the deal is concerned, signing McNally should not be all too difficult as Oxford United are said to be keen on cashing in on the star defender in order to inject some funds into the club. But it remains to be seen whether or not Tottenham can fend off interest from other clubs in the pursuit of the 22-year-old.
