La Liga trio vying for Sergi Roberto

La Liga trio Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Real Betis are reportedly keen on signing Barcelona utility man Sergi Roberto in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet L’Esportiu De Catalunya, Sergi Roberto is getting closer to leaving Barcelona as a free agent in the summer transfer window. The Spanish international is a target for three La Liga clubs Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Real Betis.

Sergi Roberto has endured a significant fall in stature over the last couple of years after being a key figure for Barcelona for a few seasons. The 30-year-old’s ability to play as a right-back and a central midfielder made him a utility man for the managers he played under. But injuries have hampered him this term.

The Spanish international has garnered only 567 minutes of game-time across 12 appearances in all competitions. And with the player’s contract running out in a few months, he will likely depart from Camp Nou as a free agent in the summer transfer window. Roberto does not have any shortage of suitors pursuing him, with La Liga trio Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Real Betis keen on signing him.

The interest from Atletico Madrid stems from the uncertainties surrounding the future of Sime Vrsaljko, who could leave the Wanda Metropolitano in the summer transfer window. With the defending La Liga champions yet to fill the void left by the departure of Kieran Trippier in January, Roberto could be the requisite solution.

But recent reports have claimed that Atletico Madrid might not be pursuing the Barcelona utility man, which makes the claims by L’Esportiu De Catalunya intriguing. As for Sevilla, with Jesus Navas in the twilight of his career, Roberto could be a viable target for Los Nervionenses.

Meanwhile, Real Betis could utilise the 30-year-old in the middle of the park, with Andres Guardado approaching the final phase of his career and William Carvalho facing an uncertain future at the Benito Villamarin Stadium.

As for Roberto, the experienced Spanish international has never been in a more uncertain position in his professional career. The 30-year-old is reportedly set for crunch talks with Barcelona. But if the discussions do not go smoothly, the player could be set to remain in La Liga, with Atletico Madrid, Real Betis, and Sevilla keen on signing him.
