Tottenham lead race to sign Memphis Depay

Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly the front-runners to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will not take the decision to sell Memphis Depay lightly amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Premier League heavyweights are reportedly in pole position to snap up the Dutch forward in the summer transfer window.

Memphis Depay joined Barcelona on a Bosman move last summer after leaving Lyon as a free agent. But after a strong start to his stint with the Blaugrana, the 28-year-old has endured a sharp decline in performance levels while also getting usurped by Ferran Torres for his left-wing berth.

The Dutch international has a decent tally of ten goals and two assists in 20 La Liga appearances. But his failures in Europe could prompt Barcelona to cash in on Depay ahead of a crucial summer transfer window where they will bolster the attacking unit. And the player has no shortage of suitors pursuing him, with Tottenham leading the race to sign him.

The interest from Tottenham stems from the uncertainties surrounding the future of Steven Bergwijn. The Dutch forward has become a bit-part player under Antonio Conte and is expected to call it quits at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window to seek regular game-time.

Bergwijn is heavily linked with several clubs, with AC Milan reportedly among those keen on prising him away from Spurs. And the Dutch international could soon be replaced by compatriot Depay, with Tottenham in pole position to land the Barcelona forward in the summer transfer window.

Apart from Tottenham, Depay is also a target for several Serie A giants, including AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus. But Barcelona will not take the decision to sell Depay lightly, especially in the wake of an impressive performance in the ongoing international break for the Dutch national side.

For now, Depay appears set to leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window, as he continues to tumble down the pecking order in the attacking unit. It remains to be seen if Tottenham will win the race to sign the 28-year-old, who will then return to the Premier League for the first time since leaving Manchester United over half a decade ago.
