Liverpool retain Jeremy Doku interest

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring the progress of Jeremy Doku and intend to make a move for the 19-year-old Rennes winger in the summer.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool remain keen on securing the services of Jeremy Doku. The Premier League giants have been following the 19-year-old Belgian international since his time at RSC Anderlecht and are considering a move for the player for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Currently plying his trade for Stade Rennais, Doku has emerged as one of the most gifted attacking talents in Europe, thanks to his superb performances in Ligue 1. He made his breakthrough in the French top flight last year, featuring in 30 league matches for Rennes.

Although the teenage prodigy’s tally of just two goals and three assists did not raise many eyebrows, the Belgian made an impression at UEFA Euro 2020, which attracted the attention of top clubs across Europe. The 19-year-old, though, has endured a slow start to the new season in Ligue 1.

Doku’s progress was marred by an injury earlier in the season. The hamstring issue has been a major problem for the explosive forward, who likes to play out wide. He has featured in just over 400 minutes of league football this term, scoring only one goal and bagging two assists.

However, Doku’s underwhelming numbers have not deterred major European clubs. Newcastle United, for one, have been interested in securing the services of the 19-year-old for a while and intend to snap him up after the end of the season, as Eddie Howe looks to upgrade his options going forward.

The Magpies, though, are set to face stiff competition from Liverpool in the pursuit of Doku. It is no secret the Reds are on the hunt for a new wide player amid uncertainties over the future of Mohamed Salah. Sadio Mane’s Liverpool contract expires at the end of next season as well, prompting Jurgen Klopp to enter the market for long-term replacements.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for emerging PSV starlet Cody Gakpo. But one could argue Doku has a higher ceiling given his exceptional pace and ability to drift past defenders with ease. While the youngster needs to work on his productivity, he could certainly thrive under Klopp at Anfield.

The Belgian international, though, could cost a fortune for Liverpool as his current contract at Rennes does not expire until 2025. It could give the French outfit the leverage to hold out for a hefty price tag for a player who is regarded as one of the best young talents in Europe.
