AS Roma have reportedly expressed an interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Charly Musonda, who will be a free agent in the summer.
According to Goal, Jose Mourinho is once again looking at Chelsea for potential reinforcements for the AS Roma squad. He has his sights on Charly Musonda, in particular, with the Portuguese tactician said to be alerted by the midfielder’s current contractual situation that expires at the end of the season.
Chelsea have no intention to renew the contract, meaning the player is set to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer. It has put Serie A giants AS Roma on alert, with Mourinho keen on shoring up his options in the middle of the park.
An attacking midfielder by trade, Musonda had been a part of the Chelsea youth setup since 2012. However, he has been one of many victims of the club’s notorious policy that saw him play at various clubs such as Vitesse, Real Betis and Celtic.
Musonda, though, has been at Stamford Bridge since last summer when he returned from his loan spell at Vitesse. The midfielder has failed to feature in a single competitive game under Thomas Tuchel and could be set for an exit from Chelsea after the end of the season.
Roma’s interest in Musonda stems from the club’s lack of cover in the attacking midfield area. While Sergio Oliveira has done well to establish himself in the Serie A giants’ first-team setup under Mourinho, the Giallorossi are bracing themselves for the exit of Nicolo Zaniolo in the summer, amid interest from Tottenham and Newcastle United.
Even Jordan Veretout has been linked with a summer move to the Premier League, which could seriously open up a massive void in the Roma midfield. Charly Musonda, to that end, could prove to be a useful cover for the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Oliveira.
Although the Belgian has seen very little action over the past couple of years, Mourinho may have noticed something in him during his time at Chelsea. Not to mention, the player had shown a lot of qualities during the early phases of his career, and at the age of just 25, he still has time to live up to his hype.
Roma have had a lot of success bringing in players from the Premier League in the recent past, with the likes of Mkhitaryan, Tammy Abraham and Ainsley Maitland-Niles all performing admirably at Stadio Olimpico. Whether or not Musonda finds a similar level of success in Serie A remains to be seen.
