Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a summer swoop for Lille centre-forward Jonathan David.

According to Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur have shortlisted five players to be targeted in the upcoming summer transfer window. Spurs are preparing for a major summer overhaul to provide Antonio Conte with a competitive squad that can challenge for silverware.

They also wish to keep hold of Harry Kane, which could only be possible if the England captain is convinced that the club have a strong enough squad to fight for trophies in the next few seasons. And, 22-year-old Canadian forward David is one of the players they are considering signing in the summer.

The 22-year-joined Lille in a €27 million move from Belgian club KAA Gent in the 2020 summer transfer window. The centre-forward finished as the top-scorer of the Belgium first division in the 2019/20 season with 18 goals, prompting Lille to move in for him.

His first-ever season in France was a fruitful one. He scored 13 and assisted three league goals, leading Lille to the Ligue 1 title, an astonishing achievement considering Paris Saint-Germain’s financial prowess and the squad they boast of.

While Lille have failed to reach the heights of the last season, David has continued his goalscoring spree. In just 28 league appearances this season, he has already matched his tally of 13 goals from the previous term. He has also scored three goals in the Champions League, showcasing his ability to play at the highest level of European football, which has put quite a few European giants on alert.

After the ongoing season, the centre-forward will still have three years remaining on his contract. But as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, David will leave the French side in the summer with several European bigwigs wanting to secure his services. It also means that Lille are in a good position to demand a big transfer fee from the interested clubs.

Thus, Tottenham will have to move quickly if they wish to land the 22-year-old this summer. As things stand, the Lilywhites have no backup for star striker Harry Kane in the No. 9 slot. Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski can play through the middle but are not natural strikers, something that the north London club needs to address in the summer. It makes David a viable target for them.

Tottenham also have Inter defender Milan Skriniar, Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, Lyon centre-back Jason Denayer and Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara on their transfer wishlist.
