Tottenham table offer for Memphis Depay

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an official approach to sign Barcelona striker Memphis Depay.

According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, the north London club have identified Memphis as a potential summer signing and have submitted an offer for the Dutch international. Memphis joined the Catalan giants last summer on a free deal from Lyon, but is now being linked with a move away from the club.

Memphis was the only shining light for Barcelona under Ronald Koeman. But since Koeman’s sacking and the subsequent appointment of Xavi as manager, he has fallen down the pecking order. The January signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres and Adama Traore and the resurgence of Ousmane Dembele haven’t helped the Dutchman’s case either.

The 28-year-old signed a two-year contract with Barcelona upon joining them on a Bosman move, and will enter the final year after the current season. As a result, he is already being linked with moves elsewhere and Tottenham have emerged as potential suitors.

The Premier League side are already preparing for life without Harry Kane, who could be on the move this summer if Spurs fail to qualify for the Champions League. He was on the verge of a Manchester City move last summer, which didn’t materialize as Daniel Levy refused to enter negotiations with the Cityzens. But it looks highly unlikely that they will be able to hold on to him past this season.

Steven Bergwijn could also be on his way out of the Premier League club just two years after arriving from PSV. He has struggled to nail down a spot in Spurs’ first team and has been linked with AC Milan, who could get him on a cut-price deal in the summer.

With Tottenham looking at multiple exits from their attacking department, their pursuit of Memphis makes sense. Despite falling down the pecking order at Barcelona, the centre-forward is still their top scorer with ten goals across competitions.

The former PSV star also has Premier League experience under his belt, though his previous stint in England wasn’t a very successful one. In two years for Manchester United, Memphis could score just seven and assist six goals in 53 appearances. If the Spurs move does happen, he would want to set that record straight.
