Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Sporting CP’s 20-year-old defender Goncalo Inacio, despite the player recently penning an extension.

According to Calciomercato, Newcastle United are interested in signing 20-year-old central defender Goncalo Inacio from Sporting CP. The Magpies are eyeing the youngster as part of their big overhaul for next season, which would involve plenty of rising stars in the squad.

Newcastle United are making tremendous plans for next season as the club look optimistic towards remaining in the Premier League. Despite spending heavily in the January transfer window, the club have ideas to strengthen their current squad even more in the summer.

Newcastle have the financial muscle and the lure of attractive salaries, which could prove crucial in attracting big players in the next window. In the immediate future, they remain focused on their efforts to escape relegation. Languishing around the drop zone in January, their current seven-game unbeaten run makes them favourites to survive the drop.

It has prompted Newcastle United to prepare ahead for the next season, with the club management emphasizing the need for defensive reinforcements. Despite signing Dan Burn in the January transfer window, Newcastle are expected to further strengthen their backline with a mixture of experience and youth.

Sevilla’s Diego Carlos remains a top target alongside others, as the Magpies continue to be linked with some of the big names in the game. Interest in Sven Botman could also be revisited in the summer, although both the Brazilian and the Dutchman will cost Newcastle a fortune.

There are also links with Andreas Christensen, who could become a free agent in the summer. But aware of the Dane’s status among top European clubs, Newcastle are scouting Goncalo Inacio as a potential alternative. The 20-year-old Portuguese starlet has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence at Sporting CP lately and has made 33 appearances across all competitions, which shows how much the club trust him.

He also recently signed a new contract with Sporting in November, which could enable the Portuguese side to command a good fee for the defender, especially if Newcastle come knocking on the door.

If he is to join the Magpies, Inacio is not expected to feature in the first team straight away but will have to wait his turn and undergo a phase of development. It is mainly to get acquainted with the English game and get a footing on the style of play. In any case, he could be an exciting signing for Newcastle, especially for the future.
