Real Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on River Plate prospect Enzo Fernandez as they look to bolster their midfield department in the summer.

According to a report from El Chiringuito TV, Real Madrid are monitoring the development of River Plate midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who has been making rapid strides in Argentina.

A product of the River Playe youth setup, Fernandez spent a year on loan at Defensa y Justicia, where he featured 32 times, scoring a goal and setting up two more. The 21-year-old was integrated into the River Plate first-team setup upon return from loan last year, and he has since thrived, bagging two goals and four assists in 28 matches.

Enzo Fernandez’s development in Argentina has seemingly attracted the attention of Real Madrid, with Jose Angel Sanchez, the right-hand man of club president Florentino Perez, bringing the midfielder to the Merengues’ notice.

Real Madrid are in the market for reinforcements in the centre of the park as they look to build a midfield department for the future, considering Luka Modric is in the final stage of his career while Toni Kroos is into his thirties. Furthermore, there is no clear backup option for Casemiro.

In Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga, Los Blancos already have two talented options to take over from the veterans, but the management wants to add at least one more young and talented midfielder, which has seen them linked to several players such as RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Ajax midfield prodigy Ryan Gravenberch.

Now, Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the development of Enzo Fernandez. The 21-year-old signed a new contract with River Plate late last year, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2025. He has a release clause worth €20 million which would not be a problem for a club of Real Madrid’s stature.

The Spanish capital outfit has tasted success by bringing in players from the South American continent. Federico Valverde, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes have all become key members of the first-team setup at the Santiago Bernabeu in recent years. Given the potential and high ceiling that Enzo Fernandez has, he can prove to be a smart investment for Real Madrid in the long run.
