Newcastle table four-year contract offer for Andreas Christensen

Newcastle United have offered a lucrative four-year contract to Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen.

According to FCInterNews, Andreas Christensen has become one of the most in-demand defenders in Europe amid interest from a host of top clubs. The Dane’s current deal at Chelsea expires at the end of the season, meaning he could be available on a free transfer. It has put multiple clubs on red alert, with Newcastle United among the teams to have already tabled a contract offer.

Indeed, the report suggests the Magpies have offered a four-year deal to Christensen in an attempt to lure him to St. James’ Park after the end of the season. The defender also has an option to extend his contract at Stamford Bridge, while Barcelona are involved in the equation as well.

Christensen has been a major success under Thomas Tuchel over the past year or so at Stamford Bridge. The defender played a crucial role in helping Chelsea lift the UEFA Champions League title last season and has remained a key figure in the Premier League this term.

With over 150 competitive appearances for the Blues, the Dane’s vast experience at the highest level of football, coupled with his status as a potential free agent, has made him an appealing target for several clubs across Europe.

Newcastle United are no exception as the Tyneside giants look to flex their financial muscle in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Magpies already spent a fortune in January, splashing over £90 million in an attempt to strengthen the squad.

Newcastle now intend to attract bigger players next summer, thanks in part to the Premier League status that is likely to be preserved next season. Christensen has been identified as an ideal player to spearhead the defence, given his experience in English football, coupled with his status as a free agent.

However, the report suggests Christensen is not too keen on joining the Magpies, as he prefers clubs with a superior heritage like Barcelona. It could ultimately force Newcastle to set their sights on other alternatives, such as Liverpool outcast Joe Gomez.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have already started to scour the market for potential replacements for the likes of Christensen. They have been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s defensive stalwart Eder Militao, although it remains unlikely that Los Blancos would want to part ways with the Brazilian anytime soon.
