Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry who is on the radars of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
According to Fussball Transfers, Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to face competition from Manchester United in the race to sign Serge Gnabry, whose contract situation at Bayern Munich is leading to speculations over his future.
Gnabry has become one of the most dangerous wide players in Europe ever since he joined Bayern Munich in 2017. He has made 159 appearances for the Bavarian giants, bagging 59 goals and 38 assists in the process. The 26-year-old has been in red-hot form this term, having already directly contributed 20 goals from 30 matches.
Gnabry’s contract with Bayern expires in 2023, and the club are facing difficulties in renewing his terms. While he wants an improved package from the club, the German international is also not entirely convinced over his role in Julian Nagelsmann’s system and is seeking assurances before deciding to pen a new deal.
At times this season, Bayern have used a three-man backline with Gnabry being deployed as a wing-back, which means that the ex-Arsenal starlet has had to do extra defensive work. And as per the report, the winger believes that it is not the best use of his talents and abilities, leading to a standoff.
It has alerted several top clubs across Europe, who are now closely monitoring the contract situation. The likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with Gnabry. Manchester United have also now entered the fray for the 26-year-old.
Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho last summer to bolster their wide attacking areas. However, they could do with more ammunition in attack, considering that Marcus Rashford has underwhelmed this term while Mason Greenwood is suspended indefinitely. At the same time, both Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will be out of contract, meaning there will be some lack of depth in the roster.
So, it makes sense for the 20-time English champions to bring in a new winger, apart from a new centre-forward. Gnabry, given his quality, would be an excellent acquisition for Manchester United. However, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also vying for his signing ahead of the summer window.
Barcelona bolstered their frontline with Ferran Torres and Adama Traore in January. The latter is expected to be signed permanently after impressing in his short time back at Camp Nou. But with Ousmane Dembele set to depart at the end of the season, there will be a vacancy in the attacking unit that someone like Gnabry can fill.
As for Real Madrid, they will also need to add depth to their options in the final third as Gareth Bale will be out of contract at the end of the season, whereas Eden Hazard could be let go as his struggles continue. Bringing in a top-quality forward like Gnabry could elevate the Merengues frontline to another level.
So, it remains to be seen whether any of the interested parties make a move for Gnabry or if he ends up signing a new contract with Bayern Munich.
