Manchester City close in on signing Savio

Manchester City have reportedly reached an agreement with Atletico Mineiro regarding the transfer of youth sensation Savio, a target for Arsenal.

According to a report from The Guardian, Manchester City are closing in on the capture of Savio. The Atletico Mineiro youngster is regarded as one of the most promising young players to come out of Brazil lately and could be on the verge of a move to the Premier League in the coming season.

Manchester City had made an official bid for the youngster earlier this month, and it appears they have now reached an agreement with Atletico Mineiro. The Brazilian outfit are prepared to offload their player for a fee of €6.5 million plus add-ons. The agreement also involves a sell-on clause while a medical has already been scheduled.

Apart from the reigning English champions, Savio was courted by a number of other clubs across Europe, including Arsenal. However, the Gunners were not able to attract the teenage sensation, who has already made 23 competitive appearances for Atletico Mineiro, despite being only 17. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, though, remains interested in landing a more established Brazilian in Philippe Coutinho.

A right-winger by trade, Savio has mesmerised the onlookers with his explosive speed and ability to drift past opposition defenders. Although yet to register a goal or assist at a competitive level, he has consistently represented his country at the youth level.

The 17-year-old’s potential move to the Etihad could be yet another major coup for Manchester City, who are closely monitoring the South American market for reinforcements. They have notably secured the signing of River Plate sensation Julian Alvarez, and it is only a matter of time before Pep Guardiola eyes more players from the football-loving continent.

Aside from Savio and Alvarez, Manchester City are monitoring Boca Juniors duo Exequiel Zeballos and Valentin Barco. As for Savio, he is set to remain at Atletico Mineiro until the end of the Premier League season before arriving at the Etihad in the summer.

The report suggests the youngster is set to be loaned to PSV Eindhoven next season if everything goes to plan. A host of Brazilians, including the in-demand Antony, have found success in the Eredivisie in recent years. Savio will certainly be aiming for a similar outcome that will go a long way in helping him build more recognition in the Manchester City first-team in the years to come.
