The Intercontinental Derby returns to RAMS Park on Monday with plenty at stake, as Galatasaray look to strengthen their grip on top spot while Fenerbahce arrive in the middle of an impressive domestic resurgence.
Okan Buruk’s champions have collected 19 points from their opening eight Super Lig matches, while Fenerbahce sit three points behind them in third. Both sides are in strong domestic form, although their recent European results tell very different stories. With the derby also carrying significant psychological weight, this promises to be one of the most intriguing fixtures of the season so far.
Galatasaray have made an encouraging start to their title defence, winning six of their eight league matches, with one draw and one defeat. Their latest domestic victory was a narrow 1-0 success against Genclerbirligi, secured by summer signing Deniz Gul’s late goal. That followed a 3-1 victory over Kasimpasa, allowing the champions to put their heavy 4-0 defeat at Trabzonspor behind them.
Their European response has been even more impressive and after suffering a 4-1 home defeat against Barcelona, Galatasaray travelled to Lille and produced an outstanding 4-2 Champions League victory. That result provided an important confidence boost ahead of one of the biggest domestic fixtures of the campaign.
The home side’s major strength on Monday, however, could be their record at RAMS Park. They have gone 39 consecutive Super Lig matches unbeaten at home, winning 31 and drawing eight. Fenerbahce were the last team to win a league match there, securing a 1-0 victory in May 2024. That extraordinary record gives Buruk’s side an important psychological advantage, although the visitors arrive with an attack capable of seriously testing it.
Fenerbahce have transformed their season over the past three league matches. After collecting seven points from their opening five games, Ismail Kartal’s side have won their last three, scoring 14 goals without conceding. The sequence includes an extraordinary 8-0 victory over Eyupspor, followed by 3-0 wins against Rizespor and Alanyaspor.
That attacking output has helped Fenerbahce establish themselves as the Super Lig’s leading scorers, with 22 goals, four more than any other side. Their defensive numbers are equally impressive. They have conceded only six goals, giving them the second-best defensive record in the division, and have kept clean sheets in each of their last four league matches.
Galatasaray have the stronger home record and enter the derby as defending champions, while Fenerbahce possess the division’s most productive attack and have recently become extremely difficult to break down.
Fenerbahce’s domestic form has not been matched in Europe as they surrendered an early two-goal advantage against Slavia Prague in midweek before eventually drawing 2-2, leaving them without a victory in the UEFA Champions League league phase.
That collapse could be significant psychologically as Galatasaray, by comparison, head into the derby after beating Lille 4-2, with Victor Osimhen also finding the net against his former club. The derby represents an opportunity for Fenerbahce to demonstrate that their domestic improvement can translate into a high-pressure fixture against the reigning champions.
Recent league meetings have provided Galatasaray with the upper hand and Fenerbahce have gone four league derbies without a victory against their rivals, drawing twice and losing twice. The most recent meeting at RAMS Park was particularly emphatic, with Galatasaray winning 3-0 in April.
Fenerbahce will therefore be attempting to overcome not only Galatasaray’s current form but also a recent psychological disadvantage in this fixture. At the same time, their last victory at RAMS Park remains significant because it ended in May 2024, the last time anyone defeated Cimbom there in the league. The Hard Tackle takes a look at how both sides could line up and what tactics they might employ on the day.
Team News & Tactics
Galatasaray
Galatasaray have a few selection issues to resolve before the derby. Rafael Leao remains a doubt after missing the Champions League victory over Lille with a groin strain, while Baris Alper Yilmaz played through discomfort during that match and could give Buruk another selection headache on the left.
Wilfried Singo is closing in on a return after recovering from a thigh injury, while Lucas Torreira is expected to return after serving his suspension. Lesley Ugochukwu is also available again after completing his two-match ban. Up front, Victor Osimhen should lead the line. The Nigerian has scored six league goals this season and also found the net against Lille, giving him considerable momentum before the derby.
The key to Galatasaray’s approach should be getting Osimhen involved early. The striker’s pace and physicality give Galatasaray the ability to attack behind Fenerbahce’s defensive line, but he can also pin the centre-backs and create space for Leroy Sane and Gabriel Sara to attack centrally.
The midfield pairing of Torreira and Mario Lemina could be particularly important. Fenerbahce have significant attacking momentum. So, Galatasaray cannot afford to allow their midfield to become stretched. The former’s defensive positioning should allow Sara to move higher and connect with the attacking players, while the latter can provide additional physicality when the hosts lose possession.
The wide areas could also determine the game. Galatasaray are likely to push their full-backs forward, but doing so carries a risk against a Fenerbahce side capable of counter-attacking quickly. If the champions can establish sustained possession, however, their movement between the lines should force Fenerbahce’s midfield backwards and create opportunities for Osimhen.
Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Cakir; Sallai, Sanchez, Bardakci, Elmali; Torreira, Lemina; Sane, Sara, Yilmaz; Osimhen

Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce will be without several players as Marco Asensio has undergone surgery for a cartilage problem in his left knee, while Nathan Ake is expected to miss around three weeks after suffering a hamstring injury against Slavia Prague. Mert Muldur remains a concern with a meniscus problem, while Jayden Oosterwolde continues to be monitored during his recovery. Amara Diouf has yet to make his debut as he works towards full fitness.
The main attacking decision concerns Vedat Muriqi. The striker has scored seven Super Lig goals, leaving him second in the scoring charts behind Trabzonspor’s Mohamed Salah, who has eight. Muriqi is expected to lead the attack ahead of Romelu Lukaku.
Fenerbahce’s biggest weapon is their attacking balance. The combination of N’Golo Kante and Matteo Guendouzi should provide the platform for the attacking midfielders to move forward without leaving the defence completely exposed. Muriqi offers Fenerbahce a different threat from Osimhen.
Rather than relying exclusively on pace, the striker can use his physical presence to hold the ball up, bring runners into play and attack crosses. Fenerbahce may therefore look to switch between patient possession and more direct attacks through Muriqi. Their defensive transition will be crucial, though.
Galatasaray’s greatest weapon could be the speed with which they attack immediately after recovering possession. Fenerbahce’s full-backs must therefore be careful about advancing simultaneously. The midfield battle could ultimately decide the derby. If Kante and Guendouzi can disrupt Sara’s supply into Osimhen while maintaining enough composure to launch attacks, Fenerbahce have a genuine chance of ending Galatasaray’s remarkable home run.
Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Semedo, Skriniar, Oppong, Mercan; Kante, Guendouzi; Aydin, Kahveci, Greenwood; Muriqi

Player to Watch
Victor Osimhen
The Galatasaray striker has already scored six Super Lig goals this season and heads into the match having also scored in the 4-2 Champions League victory over Lille. His combination of acceleration, strength and movement makes him an especially difficult forward for Fenerbahce’s centre-backs to contain.
His movement behind the defensive line could be decisive. If Fenerbahce push their full-backs forward, Osimhen will have opportunities to attack the channels, while his ability to occupy both centre-backs can create space for Leroy Sane and Gabriel Sara. There is also a psychological element as Galatasaray have dominated the recent league meetings, and Osimhen has the profile of player capable of deciding a fiercely contested derby with one moment of individual quality.
Prediction
Galatasaray 2-1 Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce’s recent domestic numbers are outstanding, and their 22 goals and four consecutive league clean sheets make them more than capable of troubling the champions. But Galatasaray’s home record is extraordinary, their confidence has been boosted by the Lille victory, and their recent record in this derby gives them another advantage.
The contest could be open and aggressive, particularly if Fenerbahce’s attacking players find space in transition. However, Galatasaray’s ability to control the tempo at RAMS Park and the presence of Osimhen up front may ultimately prove decisive.
