Dutch football columnist Valentijn Driessen has launched a stinging critique of Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk in the aftermath of a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Virgil van Dijk has come under fire for his leadership during a turbulent campaign that ended in elimination from the knockout stages.
The Netherlands fell 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Morocco in the tournament’s knockout round. The defeat triggered immediate scrutiny of the squad’s mentality and in-game leadership, with Driessen, writing for De Telegraaf, questioning whether van Dijk truly embodied the standards expected of a national team captain.
Driessen’s criticism followed earlier frustration during the group and knockout stages, where he highlighted moments in which the defender appeared reluctant to take responsibility during key defensive lapses. One incident that continues to resonate came during the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan earlier in the tournament.
Following the World Cup elimination, those criticisms intensified. Driessen questioned whether van Dijk’s pitch leadership held sway during the Morocco match, particularly in the penalty shootout. While van Dijk has long been regarded as one of Europe’s most commanding defenders, the pundit suggested that his leadership did not translate effectively in high-pressure tournament situations.
“Van Dijk has to take the team by the hand, because he is the great captain. Every game this World Cup he has betrayed everything our national team stands for. I think he is past it and he thought so himself, because Ronald Koeman had to make a lot of effort. Partly because of the criticism he has had at the previous European Championship.”
“He also took no responsibility in the penalty shootout. When you are so experienced and old, then you don’t let Crysencio Summerville take that ball, even if he should have scored it. He missed his penalty at the 2022 World Cup against Argentina, but at such a moment he has to step forward.”
The elimination has sparked wider debate in the Netherlands about the national team’s future direction. Several senior figures are now expected to review their international careers, while questions remain over the tactical setup and mentality of the squad in knockout football.
For van Dijk, the coming period may prove pivotal in determining whether he continues to guide the national side or steps back from international duties. Meanwhile, Ronald Koeman is no longer at the helm after resigning in the wake of the shock ouster against Morocco.
