Tyrell Malacia backing Cody Gakpo for Manchester United success

Tyrell Malacia insists Cody Gakpo is good enough for a top club as Manchester United remains heavily linked with the PSV star.

Cody Gakpo is the standout Dutch player at the World Cup so far. He scored in each group game and put in a rugged display against the USA in the round of 16. He will attract plenty more attention when the Netherlands take on Argentina.

A top-notch display there would put Gakpo on the radars of some of the big clubs. Manchester United has already expressed interest rather loudly, and he does seem like the favourite to arrive at Old Trafford during the January window.

Gakpo has 18 goals and as many assists for club and country this season, which are terrific numbers. He could have signed for a top club during the summer but preferred to stay put and build his reputation even further. The decision is benefitting the Dutchman in Qatar.

The links to Manchester United are refusing to die down. Recent stories insisted a deal had been agreed upon in principle. Talk may have slowed down due to the World Cup, but any move could accelerate after the Qatar event.

Tyrell Malacia’s comments on 90 Min via The Athletic hinted at a move for Gakpo, suggesting he could be a suitable fit at any top club. The Manchester United star was asked about the attacker and said he’s good enough to play at the top.

“He’s good enough for the top; there’s no doubt.”

Malacia was also asked about his future at Manchester United after playing sporadically since Luke Shaw’s return to the lineup. He said his focus remained on the Netherlands and the World Cup.

“I am focused on the tournament and want to keep performing well and helping the team. Hopefully, when we become world champions, we can think about other things.”

Meanwhile, PSV would demand a significant sum for the player, especially after his displays in Qatar. Manchester United are yet to agree on anything with the Dutch side, as Gakpo could cost a lot more now. Erik ten Hag wants him on priority as there’s confidence a deal will conclude.
