Timo Werner has no regrets over snubbing Liverpool for Chelsea

Timo Werner talked about his opportunity to join Liverpool before signing for Chelsea, claiming he has no regrets over his decision.

Chelsea have not had luck with their strikers in the past two seasons. Despite managing to lure in two of Europe’s top marksmen, they have not been able to get the best out of them in the Premier League. Romelu Lukaku’s struggles at Stamford Bridge will come as the clearest example of their issues up front.

The former Inter Milan striker cost around £100 million, which is massive considering the outlay on a single player. He has failed to re-establish himself in the Premier League, and a similar story has evolved with their other forward, Timo Werner.

Werner was from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020. Despite an early promise in his Chelsea career, he has never established himself at the club. In the two seasons at Stamford Bridge, the German has managed only ten Premier League goals and has been unable to get a starting place with regularity.

Before he signed for the Blues, there had been reports of Liverpool’s interest, and at one stage, it looked like Werner will join Jurgen Klopp’s men. Instead, Chelsea managed to steal him away. The Merseysiders have done pretty well in the ensuing years, despite missing out on the former RB Leipzig man.

Werner does not have any regrets about not playing for the Merseysiders. The Evening Standard quoted the German saying he does not have any remorse about his decision to join Chelsea instead of Liverpool.

“The only thing I can say is they have a German manager. I have known him for many years before because, when I was in Stuttgart, he talked about going to Dortmund. Then I played not so well, so it was done.

“When I was in Leipzig, I had the possibility to come to the Premier League. Liverpool were also in my thoughts and were a big possibility for me, but at the end I decided for Chelsea and I won the Champions League title last year. It was not the worst decision.”

Werner could have a chance to prove his worth against the Reds when Chelsea face Liverpool in the FA Cup Final. The German will be eager to lay his hands on the prestigious trophy after losing the chance to lift it last year.
