Tim Sherwood has warned that Igor Tudor “can only fail” following his shock appointment as Tottenham’s interim coach.
A lot is being said about Tottenham, their managerial situation and the new interim coach, Igor Tudor. Starting with the managerial situation, Spurs decided to sack Thomas Frank from his post following the league loss to Newcastle United on home soil, which left the team 16th on the table.
There’s a stark difference in being in the position compared to last season, when they finished 17th, as Spurs had a considerable gap from the bottom three then. However, in the current moment, they are only five points above 18th-placed West Ham, as there’s a real possibility of getting dragged into a relegation dog fight.
The real fear of dropping around the bottom three prompted Frank’s sacking, as they agreed a short-term deal with Tudor to become their interim coach. The Croatian, who recently managed Juventus, does not have the option to become the permanent manager with the north London side, as Mauricio Pochettino is the favourites to become the next boss of Tottenham, possibly in the summer.
There are further doubts over Tudor’s capabilities, given his below-par record with the clubs he has managed to coach previously, including Juventus. Moreover, the 47-year-old Thomas Frank replacement does not have any experience in the Premier League, and certainly lacks the know-how of managing a team near the relegation zone, which Tottenham are at the moment.
Tim Sherwood shared his views on the 47-year-old Thomas Frank replacement, as he reckoned Tudor ‘can only fail’ following his appointment as the interim manager. Sherwood’s comments that appeared in The Sun explained how the Croatian may not get any credit if he manages to keep Tottenham alive in the Premier League, which makes perfect sense from many angles.
Sherwood said, “It’s going to be difficult; he has no knowledge of the Premier League. Apart from the money, what is the upside for him?
“If he finishes 12th, he’s getting no credit. The downside is so catastrophic. Would you want your fingerprints all over Tottenham getting relegated from the Premier League?”
“I go back to it – Thomas Frank would still be there if it wasn’t for the toxic nature of the fans.”
“And I can totally understand the disgruntlement of the fans, because they’re not getting the results.”
“I heard people say they’re sleepwalking into the Championship. I think they’ll have enough, even with the injuries, to get out of it – but he will get no credit for that.”
“The downside is so great, he can only fail. He’s getting no credit for keeping Tottenham in the league.”
Sherwood’s words have a lot of meaning to them, as Tudor could be poised to ‘fail’ by managing Tottenham for the remainder of the season. The ideal wish for any Spurs fan is to have Tudor do well in his short stint, but the reality is different from the wishful thinking of many.
Tottenham are in a precarious position than many of their fans think. The threat of relegation is real at the moment, and given the difficulty of the fixtures ahead, there’s a real possibility they could go down. Moreover, the lack of experience from Tudor in such a situation could play a massive role, but only time will tell if Spurs can survive their unusual disposition.
