Tanguy Ndombele hints at Tottenham stay

Out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has hinted that he could stay put in north London.

One of Tottenham Hotspur’s most expensive signings of all time, Tanguy Ndombele has failed to cement a starting spot for himself in the Spurs line-up. He joined the club in a €60 million move from Olympique Lyon in the 2019 summer transfer window.

Two and a half underwhelming years in north London saw Ndombele make 91 appearances for the club across competitions, in which he scored ten and assisted nine goals. He struggled to adapt to the rigours of Premier League football and is now deemed surplus to requirements at Spurs.

Ndombele had joined former club Lyon on a six-month loan deal in January earlier this year, but the Frenchman now returns to Tottenham staring at an uncertain future. He reportedly doesn’t feature in Antonio Conte’s plans, but hinted that he could stay at the club with three years remaining on his contract.

“Yes, I think it’s possible to be happy at Tottenham,” he told Media Carre (via Evening Standard). “Regardless of where you can go, you can be happy or unhappy. We’ll see how things go during pre-season. I’m not putting any more pressure on myself than that. What I want is to be happy, take pleasure in what I do, play, win, that’s all I want,” he added.

Ndombele’s Lyon move didn’t go as planned. While the midfielder was a regular, making 15 appearances across competitions, the Ligue 1 side managed just an eighth-placed finish in the league and were knocked out of the Europa League quarter-finals.

The 25-year-old opened up about his time in Lyon, stressing that he doesn’t regret joining his former club on a loan deal.

“It’s complicated, mitigated,” he said. “Four months go by very, very quickly. I don’t regret it, even if we struggled. The most difficult thing to digest was getting eliminated by West Ham, but that’s part of the life of a footballer, there’s a need to know how to get back up when things don’t go well.”

The likes of AS Roma and Lazio are said to be monitoring the Frenchman’s situation. However, there have been no concrete attempts made to sign him as of yet. With Tottenham signing Yves Bissouma this summer, there is no space for Ndombele in Conte’s squad. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the French ace.
