Former Liverpool striker has urged Manchester United to replace Erik ten Hag with ex-Chelsea boss and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Erik ten Hag is currently struggling after a mediocre start to the Premier League campaign, and he has been criticised heavily, with Paul Scholes also making some comments recently. Stan Collymore has now urged Manchester United to replace the Dutch tactician with Carlo Ancelotti.
Manchester United backed him the Dutchman substantial funds during the summer transfer window. But he has not been able to get the best out of his players. The Red Devils have picked up just one win from three league matches, and they crashed to a defeat against Liverpool at home as well.
Erik ten Hag is clearly under a lot of pressure, and it remains to be seen whether the Manchester United hierarchy can remain patient with him over the next few months.
The Dutchman has not been able to deliver on the pitch despite significant backing in the transfer market. Collymore feels that Manchester United should look to replace him with the Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. The 65-year-old Italian manager is one of the best in the world, and he has managed in the Premier League before with Chelsea and Everton.
“I don’t care what anybody says, he is so far out of his depth it’s unreal,” he said in an exclusive interview before adding, “With the exception of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, the pull of Manchester United should still be big enough to make any manager in the world think about taking the job,” he added.
“INEOS should be out there trying for Carlo Ancelotti. Yes, ‘Don Carlo’ is very much a Real Madrid man, but why not say to him: ‘You’ve won everything there is to win in Madrid, do you want to come here and make us great again?’ — Regardless of what he’d say, Ancelotti is the calibre of manager United should be targeting, not below average Ten Hag.”
Ancelotti is a proven winner
There is no doubt that Carlo Ancelotti has the quality and the experience to manage Manchester United, and he could transform them on and off the pitch. The Italian knows what it takes to manage a big club and he has won several major trophies throughout his career.
The 65-year-old has recently guided Real Madrid to multiple Champions League titles, and he has won the league in multiple countries as well. It will be interesting to see if Manchester United decide to make a move for him in the near future. It is fair to assume that they are unlikely to sack the Dutch manager right away and they will probably look to be patient with him for a few months before making a final decision on his future.
Regardless, appointing the former Chelsea manager this season will be quite difficult. The 65-year-old will not want to join a club midway through the season. Any move for Ancelotti might have to wait until next summer.
Meanwhile, Manchester United will be desperate to turn things around and do well this season. They will be expected to secure UEFA Champions League qualification and push for trophies this season. However, their performances have been quite mediocre, and they need to raise their game if they want to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.
