Sporting Lisbon 0-1 Arsenal: Late Welbeck strike leads to Gunners’ eleventh win in a row [Tweets]

Arsenal notched up their eleventh victory on a trot in all competitions, when they defeated Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Arsenal maintained their perfect start to the 2018-19 UEFA Europa League, as they beat Portuguese heavyweights Sporting Lisbon 1-0 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, courtesy of a second half goal from Danny Welbeck.

Both teams came into the game with maximum points on the board after two rounds of fixtures and it looked like they were set to play out a goalless draw in what was a very low-key affair in Lisbon. However, Welbeck’s fine finish to beat Renan Ribeiro in 77th minute, sealed all three points for Unai Emery’s men, helping them strengthen their grip on the top spot in Group E.

Arsenal are on an incredible winning run now, extending to eleven matches across all competitions – their longest run of victories since October 2007. In the process, they also became the first team to beat Sporting at home in over a year. And the Gunners’ fans took to social media to celebrate their team’s brilliant streak;

Welbeck, who came up with the all important winner, was hailed by the club’s supporters, with many taking a dig at Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, who has scored fewer goals than the Englishman, despite having played nearly 800 minutes more football this season.
