Sergio Ramos has opened up on Manchester United’s interest many years ago and said that he was close to joining the club.
Sergio Ramos was one of the best central defenders in his pomp, and there was hardly anyone who came close to the Real Madrid legend. Only a few players can achieve what he has with the Spanish giants, winning four Champions League and five La Liga titles.
In addition, he has also been an exceptional performer for the Spanish national side, winning the World Cup and two European Championships. During his peak at Real Madrid, or instead entering his best phase at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ramos did attract plenty of interest from other clubs.
Despite some heavy links, particularly to Manchester United many years ago, Ramos chose to stay at Real Madrid. By his admission, it was the right career decision, and he only moved out of the club in 2021 in a free transfer to PSG.
This summer, when his contract with the Parisians was about to expire, Manchester United may have planned a shock swoop for the Real Madrid legend. Erik ten Hag was looking for an experienced defender in the market but chose only to bring veteran Jonny Evans on a short-term deal.
Going back to their interest in 2014, Ramos has now revealed he came close to joining Manchester United in his comments on AS. At the time, the Red Devils were keen to replace formidable stars Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand with quality and had heavy links with the Real Madrid legend.
Ramos said, “Yes, I was close to playing for United. My father is a great fan of that team, but I stayed where I should, Real Madrid. Despite everything, I maintain my admiration for the club, for the Premier League and its players, because the pace of play is different, and it is a league from which we can all learn a lot. “I was happy to stay in Madrid, and now I am happy to be in Seville.”
During the summer, Ramos had many different links to clubs as he entered the free-agent pool. Some reports claimed Manchester United reportedly failed with a deadline day move, but they have not been much chatter about it.
Some other reports linked him with a return to the Bernabeu, but Real Madrid appeared uninterested in re-signing the veteran. After prolonged talks with Saudi Arabian clubs, Ramos chose to help out his boyhood club, Sevilla, who were struggling in the market to sign players.
Ramos has been a regular performer for Sevilla this season. But a recent injury will see him miss the next few games, including the return leg with Arsenal at the Emirates. He will probably return after the next international break, and his club will need him for a crunch period ahead.
