Former Chelsea defender Scott Minto has slammed the Blues for their transfer policy and urged them to sign Ivan Toney.
Chelsea have not made the best of starts to the new Premier League season. They are currently tenth in the Premier League with four wins and as many defeats in their 11 matches. Mauricio Pochettino has not been able to get the desired results at his new club.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Scott Minto feels things could go from bad to worse in the next few weeks. The Blues could suffer a few more defeats because of the kind of fixtures that await them in the coming weeks. However, Minto still feels Pochettino is the right fit for the club.
The former Chelsea full-back wants the club to stick with the Argentine manager even if things do not improve over the next few weeks. He does not want the Londoners to be one of the clubs that keeps changing managers.
Minto wants them to stick with Pochettino. He feels they have been playing better football than last season and that the fact that Chelsea do not have a world-class striker and a goalkeeper is hurting them. Minto suggested that the former Spurs boss needs time and he could turn things.
He could surely help them push for a spot in the Premier League top four in the near future. The 52-year-old even criticised Chelsea’s transfer policy. Since their takeover, the Blues have spent a fortune on young players with huge potential.
While Minto feels signing young players with sell-on value is a must, the club should also focus on the present. He feels the new owners haven’t bought well. They should focus on signing world-class players who can help them in the present.
The former Chelsea defender has urged them to sign Ivan Toney. The 27-year-old Brentford striker is currently serving a ban but he will be back in January and given his past performances in the English top flight he could be a great addition to their ranks.
Minto said via Daily Mirror, “For me, the philosophy of their recruitment wasn’t right and ultimately, the new owners haven’t bought well. Everyone wants to buy potential with sell-on value but it’s also about the present and they haven’t signed enough players for the here and now. They haven’t bought an elite striker although Chelsea were unlucky with Christopher Nkunku’s injury.”
“I do like Nicolas Jackson, who is very raw and still learning top-level football, let alone at a huge club like Chelsea. There’s a good chance he could get 15 Premier League goals which is a great return but I still think Chelsea should go and get Ivan Toney.”
Toney could solve the London clubs’ problems in the final third of the pitch, and Pochettino could have a world-class striker that he could bank on. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea land him in January.
