Ruben Amorim has taken a swipe at Manchester United legends, insisting that they are “talking a lot about things” as he reflected on his time at the club.
Ruben Amorim endured a difficult spell as Manchester United manager and was relieved of his duties midway through last season. Former midfielder Michael Carrick then took over on an interim basis and guided the club to a third-place finish and a return to the Champions League.
Carrick has since become Manchester United’s permanent manager, while Amorim took charge of AC Milan during the summer. The Portuguese manager has already secured a victory over the Red Devils in a pre-season friendly, and he has now made some pointed comments about his former club.
Amorim aims dig at Manchester United legends
Amorim appeared to take a swipe at several Manchester United legends, insisting that they are always “talking a lot about things”. His comments were published by The Mirror.
Amorim said, “I was at a club [Manchester United] with a lot of legends. They have strong opinions and talk a lot about things. They lived in a completely different era.”
Amorim’s comments carry some weight, given that several well-known former Manchester United players now hold prominent positions in football media. Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Roy Keane, and Paul Scholes regularly discuss the club’s performances on their podcasts and were frequently critical of Amorim during his time in charge.
Amorim managed Manchester United for 63 matches across all competitions. Although he won 25 of those games, he also suffered 23 defeats. That represented a poor win ratio for the Portuguese manager, although former United bosses with better records have also faced significant criticism.
There is a constant level of pressure created by former players and pundits working in the media, and that may be what Amorim was referring to. However, his tenure at Manchester United failed to produce anything close to success, or even provide clear signs that the team was improving under his management.
Now at AC Milan, Amorim will hope to revive the fortunes of the Rossoneri, who are in a similar position to the one Manchester United were in when he took charge. His criticism of the Manchester United legends may carry some weight, but he will ultimately be judged by his team’s performances, which fell well below the standards expected at Old Trafford.
