Ruben Amorim suggests West Ham United talks were a mistake

West Ham United have been linked with the move for the Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim.

The 39-year-old manager has been linked with a move to the Premier League and he was recently in London for talks with West Ham.

The Hammers are looking to freshen things up and bring in a new manager at the end of the season. It has been a disappointing league campaign for them, and David Moyes is likely to be shown on the door at the end of the season.

Amorim is widely regarded as one of the finest young managers in European football and he should prove to be a quality acquisition if the Hammers can get the deal done.

However, the Portuguese manager has now issued an apology to the Sporting CP fans and the club for his unprofessional behaviour. He feels that he should not have travelled to London for talks with another club while he is still employed by Sporting CP.

Amorim revealed that he is very demanding of his players when it comes to attitude and behaviour. He added that he should not have made the mistake and he will to learn from it.

Amorim said (h/t Mirror): “So let’s get the elephant out of the room and I’ll talk about it once. The first thing is to say that the club was aware of my trip. It’s important and changes the context.

“Then, talk about the cloak of secrecy that surrounded the trip. I secretly parked the car outside, secretly walked past 15 people, past people and took photographs and got on a plane to take away a little bit of this thing that was all done behind the club’s back, that didn’t happen.

“Obviously my trip was a mistake, the timing was completely wrong, it didn’t seem right at the time. It was wrong, especially when I’m so demanding with my players and always the first to say that each one’s problems don’t go away. They can overpower the team, I have already removed players from the squad for much less. It was my mistake, I have to accept it and live with it.”

Amorim was linked with Liverpool as well

Sporting CP are currently fighting for the league title and Amorim will be hoping to guide them to domestic glory before deciding on his future. It will be interesting to see if West Ham can convince him to take over next season.

He was linked with a move to Liverpool as well, but the Reds have moved on from him. They have chosen to bring in Arne Slot as a replacement for Jurgen Klopp. The 45-year-old Dutchman has impressed with Feyenoord and he could prove to be an exciting addition.
