Ronnie Rosenthal believes Darwin Nunez can replace Mohamed Salah for Liverpool if the Egyptian leaves the club.
The future of Mohamed Salah will become a significant talking point in the future windows starting with January, as Saudi Clubs are likely to return with their interest. The Reds refused to sell their talismanic star during the latter stages of the summer window, but the belief is that things could change in 2024.
Salah is expected to leave Liverpool in 2024, but whether that is in January remains the question. Al Ittihad were the club who reportedly made a £150 million bid, which Liverpool rejected. Talks about an improved offer of more than £220 million became the central talking point, but there are doubts about whether a new request ever arrived.
Liverpool has no intention to sell Salah in January, but if another big money offer arrives in the summer, they might consider the proposal. Jurgen Klopp is already planning on a succession plan for their Egyptian talisman.
Leroy Sane is considered as an option to replace Salah, but Ronnie Rosenthal believes the club already have an internal solution. In his comments on Team Talk, he expressed the feeling that Salah would leave the club soon, but named Darwin Nunez as the readymade replacement for the Egyptian.
On Salah’s potential departure, Rosenthal said, “I think Salah would have been allowed to leave if the club had found a player with the right profile to replace him,”
“They will be already be working on a replacement, knowing the importance of planning as the interest from Saudi Arabia will not be going away.
“I expect Mo will go to Saudi, and I believe it makes sense to sell when a big offer comes in, with just under two years remaining on his contract at the age of 31.
“For Saudi, he will be seen as a huge part of their project and if he stays fit, then he could play on for another three or four years.”
On Nunez becoming the internal option to replace Salah, Rosenthal continued, “Nunez was a good signing, he definitely has what it takes to score goals consistently,” Rosenthal added.
“It’s not easy adapting to a first season in England, but you could see he was dangerous with his speed and strength.
“He’s a player I’d watched before he went to Benfica and you could see he was going to be a very good player.”
Salah has been sensational this season and proved his worth this term by being Klopp’s leading go-to man. His loss would prove challenging for Liverpool, but they have the means to replace him adequately. As Rosenthal insists, Nunez certainly is an exciting option, but there are questions about whether the 24-year-old can satisfactorily perform at the same level in the coming years.
