Romelu Lukaku has revealed how he might have forced a move to Chelsea after Inter Milan rejected a series of offers from the Premier League club.
Chelsea grabbed headlines when they announced the surprise signing of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker returned to Stamford Bridge seven years after leaving for Everton. However, his arrival has given way to widespread praises as he has put the club firmly in contention for multiple honours.
The Premier League giants chased Erling Haaland for most parts of the summer without reaching an agreement. Once it was clear the Norwegian striker was out of bounds, Chelsea immediately switched their attention back towards Lukaku. The Blues hoped to take Inter Milan’s financial situation and made a big offer.
Inter Milan were not keen on selling Lukaku, especially after he helped them win the Serie A title after 11 long years. However, reports emerged that the Italian club could consider a bid if their conditions were met. And it seems like Chelsea made at least three offers, all of them rejected by the Serie A side.
Lukaku then seemed to have taken matters into his own hands and conducted discussions with the Inter Milan hierarchy. The Chelsea striker has now revealed how he forced the move through after Inter rejected Chelsea’s last offer worth €110 million-plus full-back Davide Zappacosta.
Fabrizio Romano tweeted out quotes from Lukaku as he revealed how the move to Chelsea transpired.
Lukaku’s comments read, “When Chelsea made their third offer, I knew it was serious, and I was no longer with my head in Milan. Chelsea offered €110 million plus Zappacosta, but Inter said no. So I told Inzaghi: Inter pulled me out of the deep hole, but I wanna leave only because of Chelsea.”
Lukaku was admired at Inter Milan for his top-notch performances for the club. He might not have left the side if any other club came in for him. However, he has always loved Chelsea and could not resist the temptation of rejoining the Blues.
What now remains to be seen is if Lukaku can do enough to power Chelsea back to the summit of the Premier League. Having said that, it goes without saying that his addition has improved Chelsea considerably, making them a force to be reckoned with.
