Robbie Fowler agrees with Liverpool decision to end Jude Bellingham interest

Liverpool recently decided to cool interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder and Real Madrid target Jude Bellingham.

Recent reports have claimed that Liverpool have moved on from Jude Bellingham because of the transfer fee involved. And they will now look to bring in other options. Meanwhile, club legend Robbie Fowler has revealed in his column with Daily Mirror that the decision is a smart one.

The Reds have multiple weaknesses in their squad, and they cannot afford to spend a club-record fee on just one player. While Bellingham remains a world-class talent, Liverpool need at least three quality midfielders. So the 19-year-old Dortmund star simply cannot solve all of Liverpool’s issues all by himself.

Fowler wrote, “I won’t say ‘I told you so’, but Liverpool have finally caught up with my recent column suggesting it’s madness to spend their entire transfer budget on one player. Ok, I will say that…but I take little satisfaction in pointing it out. The fact is, they have a glaring weakness in their team, and that can’t be fixed by signing Jude Bellingham on his own.”

Liverpool are set to lose players like Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner when their contracts expire in the summer, and they will have to replace those players adequately. They cannot just hope to head into the new season with one midfield signing.

Furthermore, the Liverpool midfield is lacking in goals and assists. Out of the 11 midfielders Klopp has used this season, they have produced a combined total of seven assists. In comparison, Manchester City midfielders have produced a total of 35 assists and 40 goals.

Liverpool must look to improve their midfield to get back to challenging for the major honours. But it remains to be seen whether they can bring in their preferred targets. Liverpool have been linked with players like Alexis Mac Allister, Mason Mount, Moises Caicedo, and Ryan Gravenberch in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have regressed significantly, and Liverpool cannot hope to use them as regular starters anymore. In addition to that, Thiago Alcantara has had persistent injury problems since his move to Anfield.

Liverpool will have to rebuild their squad during the summer transfer window, and it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds. There is a high possibility that Liverpool won’t be in the Champions League next season. So attracting top talents could be difficult for them.

As for Bellingham, the midfielder is thought to be a target for Real Madrid and Manchester City as well. The two clubs certainly have the financial resources to afford him, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up. Real Madrid are probably planning for a future without Luka Modric, and the in-demand 19-year-old could prove to be a quality replacement for the club legend.
