Rio Ferdinand has questioned why Manchester United did not sign Federico Chiesa in the summer despite their links to the Juventus star.

Federico Chiesa has seen his stock rise since signing for Juventus, with some terrific performances for the Turin side. Additionally, the ever-growing interest from European and English clubs is proof of his rising reputation. He capped off a good season by helping Italy win the Euro 2020, beating England in the Wembley Final.

Chiesa was one of the sought-after players that clubs chased fruitlessly during the summer. Juventus made it clear he was untouchable and refused to entertain any offers or enquiries, particularly from English clubs. The Turin side consider him one of their top stars and want to build their future teams around him.

Moreover, his initial loan deal from Fiorentina is yet to be made permanent. Juventus have an obligation clause, which will kick in at the end of the current campaign. Chiesa will sign a new contract in the summer and automatically become a long-term prospect at the Allianz Stadium.

Yet former defender Rio Ferdinand thinks there was a chance for Manchester United to sign Chiesa during the summer window.

Ferdinand was disappointed his former club failed to sign him in the summer. The pundit expected Chiesa to move to the Premier League after extensive interest from few clubs. The Daily Mail caught up with some of his quotes on missing out on the winger’s signature.

Ferdinand said, “He’s a huge player, and he’s been linked with a few clubs in England. I’m sure they’re thinking, why didn’t we get him? He’s just a fantastic footballer. The intensity with which he plays with, we saw in the Euros, he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament.”

Manchester United instead signed Jadon Sancho to solve their wide attacking problems from Borussia Dortmund. Sancho has, however, thoroughly struggled so far at the club, failing to score or assist a single goal thus far. But he’ll come good as the season progresses, or so it is hoped by United fans.

As for Chiesa, he continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool. He has started the season well and helped Juventus down Chelsea in the Champions League earlier this week.

Chiesa is not going anywhere. Juve is not a pub side and want to build the team around Chiesa and Dybala now that Ronaldo has gone. Not every player want to go to England – these arrogant English pundits need to get a grip on things.
