Rio Ferdinand has given his verdict on Mason Mount and James Maddison, picking the latter on his current Tottenham form.
The summer transfer window saw two creative midfielders change clubs, and the expectation was that they would improve their new teams. Only one has done that so far, with James Maddison shining since moving to Tottenham, while Mason Mount has blown hot and cold.
Maddison has been instrumental under Ange Postecoglou. He has produced the goods to become one of their important stars this term. His two assists in the north London Derby and then the performance against Liverpool ensured Spurs remained unbeaten in the league. Harry Redknapp has already predicted for him to have a bright career at Spurs.
Maddison has taken on the mantle to fill the void left by Harry Kane in this side. While the two players have different profiles, the former has managed to replicate the character of the latter at Tottenham.
There has been a lot of comparison involving Maddison, and different people have varied opinions on the £40 million Tottenham star. For instance, Darren Bent picked Dominik Szoboszlai over the former Leicester City man. Others have insisted Maddison is no better than Arsenal’s Maddison Odegaard.
The Liverpool and Arsenal stars may have been better than the £40 million Tottenham star. But Maddison does edge out Manchester United’s summer signing Mason Mount. That’s certainly the choice of Rio Ferdinand, who feels the Spurs man is better in his current form.
Ferdinand told talkSPORT, “That score would have been reversed if it was two years ago. But right now on form you’ve got to go Maddison. He’s gone into Spurs and they look a really good team and everything positive they’re doing he’s at the heartbeat of it.”
Mount has struggled since making his high-profile move to Manchester United from Chelsea. The signing came under scrutiny following fans’ opinions on what their club actually wanted. Under Erik ten Hag, the former Blues man has played predominantly in a midfield role, although he is much more suited to playing advanced on the pitch.
In any case, the Manchester United summer signing has not showcased his talent after an injury in the early part of the season. He only returned to action for their back-to-back games against Crystal Palace at home, and many feel he will come good for the Red Devils.
Ferdinand is right when suggesting Maddison is better in current form. Mount hit peak performances during his Chelsea days as they went on to win the Champions League, but has since seen his form dip for club and country.
