Pep Guardiola rules out James Trafford exit amid emerging links

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has now opened up on the future of James Trafford, who has been linked with a move away from the club.

As relayed by Sky Sports, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has now ruled out a potential winter departure for former Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Trafford has struggled for regular opportunities at Manchester City, and naturally, there have been speculations surrounding his future. However, Manchester City do not plan to let him move anytime soon.

Asked about Trafford’s situation, Guardiola said, “He is an incredible keeper. Unfortunately, [Donnarumma], is the first keeper. I know the position of keeper is so special. During the year, in one game you can change, but the keeper is special. Of course, [Trafford] is with us. He will be with us this season. After we will see what happens.”

Asked if he stays in January, Guardiola confirmed, “Absolutely. I don’t have any news about that, regarding him. [He] stays here.”

It will be interesting to see if the former Burnley goalkeeper can work hard and cement his place in the starting lineup. He was expected to be the first-choice goalkeeper at the club before they signed Gianluigi Donnarumma. Trafford will need to compete with the Italian international and prove he is worthy of the starting spot.

Manchester City paid £27 million to sign the English goalkeeper, and he has been linked with multiple clubs in recent weeks. It will be interesting to see if any of those clubs are willing to come forward with a loan proposal to test the resolve of Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are one of the wealthiest clubs in the country, and they do not need to sell players to balance their books. It will be difficult for any club to convince them. The Citizens are hoping to fight for major trophies, and they need a deeper squad with quality. Trafford could prove to be an excellent option for them during rotation and injuries.

The Englishman was the best goalkeeper in the EFL Championship last season, and he has the qualities to do well in the Premier League as well. There is no doubt that he is good enough to start for most Premier League teams.

Having a player of his quality as a backup option makes Manchester City immensely strong. It is no surprise that they do not want to let the goalkeeper move on in the near future. Meanwhile, the player will be frustrated with the lack of opportunities, and he will be desperate to play regularly.
