Morten Hjulmand would not be opposed to the idea of joining a Premier League side one day, but right now remains focused on Sporting CP.
Sporting CP and some of the Portuguese sides have operated at a very high level when it comes to the business of football and transfers. They have consistently made profits off player sales, especially those acquired for a small sum and then sold for massive fees.
They might have stumbled upon another such player in Morten Hjulmand. The 24-year-old midfielder was a shining light for Ruben Amorim’s side this season. Sporting went on to lift the league title, and the Danish midfielder played a huge role in that success.
A €16.5 million arrival from Lecce last summer, the Dane has featured predominantly as a defensive midfielder, with that particular position in big demand in the Premier League. Manchester United are interested in the 24-year-old midfielder alongside some of the other sides.
Tottenham watched him regularly in 2024 and could see him as a significant addition to Ange Postecoglou’s side in the summer. However, the 24-year-old midfielder does not appear in a big rush to leave Sporting CP in a hurry, although he suggests he might be open to a move to the Premier League one day.
In an interview with Record via Sport Witness, Hjulmand was explicitly asked about the interest of Premier League sides, but the midfielder remained coy about the future. More than that, he did not hint in any way that he could leave Sporting CP, instead suggesting he was open to staying at the Liga club.
Hjulmand said, “I haven’t thought about it. There are rumours all the time about different players, coaches and clubs. It’s normal.”
“It’s not something a player should waste energy or time on. We need to have our minds focused elsewhere: here, on our day-to-day lives, when we have so many games to play.”
“I can say that this time at Sporting has been incredible. I really enjoy coming to train every day, I like living in Portugal and I still have a long-term contract with Sporting. Of course I want to stay at the club!”
When asked about the growing interest in the Premier League, he said, “Maybe one day it will be the right time to go to the Premier League… But I’m very happy where I am now and with my life at Sporting,”
Hjulmand’s profile will attract many teams in the Premier League, and it is no surprise that Manchester United and Spurs are in the chase. However, the player has a big contract, with an €80 million release clause attached, before any team might approach.
Sporting are excellent negotiators like some of their fellow Portuguese sides, meaning they will demand a significant fee, if not the entire value of the clause. Whether teams like Spurs and Manchester United are ready to invest heavily in a player with a season full of top experience remains to be seen.
