Martin Zubimendi explains decision to snub Liverpool

Liverpool were keen on signing Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window, but the Spanish international snubbed them.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi decided to snub a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window. The UEFA Euro 2024 winner has now revealed in an interview with El Diario Vasco why he chose to stay at the Spanish club.

The 25-year-old midfielder has revealed that he did not want to rush into a decision regarding his future and that he decided that staying at the Spanish club for now would benefit him. The UEFA Euro 2024 winner feels that he needs to continue his growth before taking a big step. He also feels that there will be plenty of opportunities ahead of him if he is good enough.

He told El Diario Vasco, “I went on vacation, and it caught me by surprise. It wasn’t something I had planned. I reacted when the situation arose. It was an uncomfortable time for me but I weighed the pros and cons and concluded that the best option was to stay. I don’t believe in ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunities.”

“If you’re good and want to achieve something, it will come to you. There’s no need to rush. I looked at my personal progression, who I am, and the club’s project. I stayed because I knew this season would be important for me in the team, and I still had steps to take. It wasn’t that hard of a decision. There were many reasons for my decision, but I was selfish and thought about what was best for me – and that was staying.”

Liverpool need a quality midfielder

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool decides to make a move for the Spanish midfielder once again. They could certainly use more quality and depth in the middle of the park. Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have been outstanding for Liverpool, but the Reds are lacking depth in that area.

Signing another quality central midfielder like Zubimendi would be ideal. The 25-year-old will help them control the tempo of the game from the deep and he will help out defensively as well. He has shown his quality for club and country in recent months, and there is no doubt that he has the quality to succeed in the Premier League as well.

The Spanish international could be a key player for Liverpool and he could help them win major trophies. It remains to be seen whether the Reds can convince the player to join them in the coming months. However, he is also a target for other high-profile clubs, including Manchester City.
