Marijn Beuker confirms Ajax interest in Christian Eriksen

Ajax chief Marijn Beuker has confirmed the Eredivisie club’s interest in Manchester United midfield star Christian Eriksen.

Manchester United are expected to be very busy in the summer transfer window. While their priority will be to reinforce their squad, Old Trafford will also look to offload quite a few of their stars to make room for new signings. Christian Eriksen is one of the players who is expected to be on the move this summer.

Now, it has emerged that his former club, Ajax, are interested in signing him on a free transfer. While the Dane has been linked with a move to Anderlecht, a return to Ajax remains a strong possibility for the Danish international, who has 44 goals for his country.

The Dutch club’s sporting director, Marijn Beuker, recently talked about the possibility of re-signing Christian Eriksen ahead of next season. While speaking to ESPN (h/t Manchester Evening News), he said,

“He is one of the players who has performed fantastically with us in the past that we are thinking about. There will be multiples in the media. Other names mentioned are those of Dusan Tadic and Daley Blind.

“Such players are always an option. To look at it. It has to fit into the phase we are in, though. In the salary structure. You also don’t want to block youth players coming up. That we are open to thinking about it is clear. Only it has to fit into the overall picture for the future.”

Eriksen made the move to Old Trafford ahead of the 2022/23 season. While he was a key figure in Erik ten Hag’s team during his debut season, the 33-year-old has been in and out of the team ever since. Things have gone from bad to worse for the Danish international since the arrival of Ruben Amorim towards the end of 2024.

He has found himself on the bench in the majority of the fixtures under the Portuguese manager. Eriksen is well aware of the fact that he is not an important part of Amorim’s plans moving ahead. Meanwhile, his contract runs out at the end of the season, and the Red Devils have not had any renewal talks with him.

Eriksen’s potential return to Ajax

Manchester United are looking to make room in midfield, and they won’t mind letting Christian Eriksen leave for free. As far as the 33-year-old is concerned, he still feels he has a lot of football left in him, as illustrated by his exploits to score 44 goals in international football, and is eager to try out another challenge in the final phase of his career.

While the Dane has been linked with a move to Belgium, he could end up making a return to Ajax. The veteran playmaker spent over four years at the Dutch club, enjoying significant success during his time there. The Eredivisie giants are keen on re-signing him, with their chief openly addressing the interest.

While Ajax are open to his return, he should fit into their plans and their financial structure. More importantly, signing experienced campaigners like Eriksen should not block the path for any youngster to break into their first team.
