Darren Bent has urged Manchester United to emulate Chelsea’s sacking of club legend Frank Lampard and show Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the exit doors.
Speaking on talkSPORT, former Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland striker Darren Bent has urged Manchester United to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and appoint a more accomplished manager in the manner that Chelsea did earlier this year.
Chelsea removed club legend Frank Lampard from the managerial post in January earlier this year after results were going downhill. The Blues’ owner Roman Abramovich replaced him with Thomas Tuchel and the German tactician led the club to their second UEFA Champions League crown last season.
Tuchel followed it up with a UEFA Super Cup triumph and has turned Chelsea into one of the main contenders for the Premier League table. Now, Bent is of the opinion that Manchester United would stand to benefit from a similar approach as pressure on Solskjaer continues to grow after a run of sorry results.
Indeed, the Red Devils have won just one of their last five matches across all competitions and succumbed to a humiliating 4-2 loss to Leicester City this past weekend. The team has looked disjointed at times and lacks a clear identity, mostly relying on fast counters or individual moments of brilliance.
? “Abramovich sacked a club legend for the good of the club & wins the #UCL.”
? “#CFC got the right coach in and they went on to win it. I think #MUFC need to do the same with Solskjaer!”

Calls for Solskjaer’s head have been mounting with each passing game and Bent has now joined the camp demanding for the Manchester United boss to be sacked, claiming that the 20-time English champions need to be ruthless like Chelsea were when dismissing a club legend such as Lampard.
“I was talking about it on Sunday, Roman Abramovich has obviously got a personal relationship with Frank Lampard, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s got a relationship with the Manchester United board. You look at the two owners. One of them made a decision for the best interests of the football club, in terms of going forward,” he said, as quoted by the Mirror.
“Because I don’t think at that period, I know it wasn’t going that well for Frank, but it wasn’t a disaster. But all of a sudden, he went ‘I don’t like where this is going, it’s probably the hardest decision I’m going to have to make, sacking a club legend’. They bring in Thomas Tuchel, then go on and win the Champions League.”
“They get the right coach in, they turn it around, they go on and win it, and I think the board need to do the same with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. I do respect the fact he has brought the feel-good factor back to Manchester United, but three years down the line, they have to have won something.”
