Manchester United told they made a mistake selling Scott McTominay

Former Scottish striker Joe Jordan has insisted that Manchester United made a mistake with the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli.

Scott McTominay has done exceedingly well since moving to Napoli in the summer, as he is one of the main players in their charge towards the Serie A title. The 28-year-old has been shining at his new club with six goals and four assists in the league. Some of those proved to be clutch moments for Antonio Conte’s side.

Conte has regularly relied on the midfielder since he was signed from Manchester United in the summer. McTominay has been one of their key stars this season, as many have had baffling questions about why the Red Devils let him leave in the first place.

Fellow countryman Billy Gilmour also joined from Brighton & Hove Albion in the same window, and while he did cement a starting spot earlier in the season, the Scotsman has not played much of late. In any case, McTominay has had no such issues, as he has taken the league by storm and continues to be one of Conte’s key stars.

Former Scottish striker Joe Jordan, with his comments on Tutto Mercato Web, insisted Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay was a big mistake. He highlighted how well the 28-year-old has been shining at his new club, and the experience he packs is one of the reasons why he feels he could have done well at Old Trafford had he stayed on.

Jordan said, “Napoli did well to take the midfielder, Manchester United did badly to let him go. A mistake that I can only explain with the confusion that has reigned in the club in recent years: McTominay spent seven years at United, he was a regular in midfield, he played over 200 games, he won the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League.”

“Athletic, technical, with a sense of goal: he left a void in the middle of the pitch, increasing the problems of a team that already struggles to score goals. I look at the statistics and I see that McTominay has played practically the entire time, scoring 6 goals and providing 2 assists. I see these numbers and I think that the deal was made by two: Napoli and the player”.

In hindsight, Manchester United could have done well in keeping Scott McTominay, as he has been a regular performer for the club under different managers. The reason for his sale was probably financial, as the Red Devils had to sell players who have come through their academy.

McTominay’s departure to Napoli allowed them to make a pure profit from his sale as he was a homegrown player. The deal might have helped them gain financially. Still, they lost a player of great quality in the 28-year-old market, as they are currently in the market scouring different midfielders, including Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, among others. So there is an argument to be had despite McTominay being at the top of his game.
