Donny van de Beek’s agent Guido Albers has slammed Manchester United for their treatment of the player during the summer as he sought regular paying time.
Donny van de Beek’s time at Manchester United has been shrouded with doubt and uncertainties. The Dutch star, signed amid much fanfare from Ajax last summer, has so far failed to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans. There have been hopes that he could feature prominently this season, but that idea has come into some doubt already.
The midfielder played 36 times across all competitions last season, starting only 15 of those games. However, Solskjaer has come to indicate the situation with the player might change considering the first season was one of transition and adaptation. However, van de Beek has failed to play a single minute in three games so far this term.
While there were whispers of interest from clubs in the Dutchman during the window, nothing concrete arrived publicly. However, his agent Guido Albers has now revealed of concrete interest in van de Beek from clubs across Europe and England could have materialised had Manchester United lowered their stance.
Now that the transfer window has closed, stories of failed moves emerge concerning van de Beek, with Albers slamming Manchester United for their part in handling the situation. The midfielder, having missed out on the Euros, focused his efforts on building fitness during pre-season and was primed to feature more regularly.
Albers has now revealed solid interest from elsewhere, and Manchester United blocked any potential move, reportedly to Everton, where he could have been a regular. The agent was speaking about the situation to Voetball International while the comments concerning van de Beek appeared on Goal.
Albers said, “There was a lot of interest from Italy, Germany, England, so that looked good. But you need the co-operation of the club, and it looked like they would, but ultimately they didn’t.”
“Disappointed, but also assuring for him, so that he will get his chance, and will get his minutes, but this will become clear in due time. He’s been promised that before, but we came to a clear agreement about this with the club, so we have all faith that it will happen now.”
Albers was later asked if van de Beek was unhappy given how things transpired, and he replied, “I won’t say. But everybody who knows Donny knows he loves the game and he wants to be on the pitch every week. So from this answer, you can probably tell what he wanted most.”
It goes without saying that the situation is far from ideal for van de Beek. However, it remains to be seen if he is afforded more game-time in the coming matchdays, as his situation becomes more frustrating for him.
