Manchester United have been hailed by Gary Lineker and Darren Ambrose for securing the services of Raphael Varane this summer.

Manchester United mean business this summer. After completing the belated acquisition of Jadon Sancho, one year after they first pursued him intently, the Red Devils have gone on to secure the services of Raphael Varane, who is set to complete a move from Real Madrid soon.

Varane’s addition was crucial for Manchester United, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has often been left frustrated by the inconsistencies of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly. The duo’s injury issues last season did not help matters either, and it was clear that a more reliable partner for Harry Maguire had to be signed.

That move has been completed in the form of Raphael Varane, with his arrival being greeted with a lot of excitement from Manchester United. However, it is not just United supporters who have been full of praise for the transfer, with England legend Gary Lineker summing up the signing with a simple, “Now, that’s a damn good signing.”

It is not just Lineker who has waxed lyrical about Varane and his move to Manchester United, with Darren Ambrose also lauding the record 20-time English champions for completing the transfer in a segment on talkSPORT (h/t Daily Express).

Ambrose said, “They did need to improve in that area. Harry Maguire has had a fantastic Euros, so he’ll come back full of confidence. But to have someone next to him like Varane, a World Cup winner, multiple La Ligas, Champions League. Again, I think four Champions Leagues. He’s a winner, he’s still young, still only 28. So £40m plus add-ons, if that’s true, is an outstanding price that they’re getting him for.”

“In terms of defence, if they can get potentially Trippier with rumours of him as well that’s going to come in. We don’t know what will happen, whether he will be a back-up or whether Aaron Wan-Bissaka will try and move in and play three at the back. But you’re looking at a fantastic defence there. If you’ve got three of Maguire, Wan-Bissaka and Varane, that looks unbeatable at the moment.”

Manchester United do appear to be quite formidable at the back as far as their first-choice back four is concerned, with Varane’s acquisition sure to make them a force to be reckoned with. It now remains to be seen if the Frenchman can replicate his success with Real Madrid at Old Trafford and thereby end their trophy drought in the process.
