David de Gea made another serious mistake that ended up costing Manchester United, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow top-four hopefuls Chelsea.
With both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal losing their fixtures earlier, Manchester United and Chelsea had everything to play for at Old Trafford on Sunday. And the home team made a strong start to the contest, with Juan Mata getting them off the mark against his former club early in the game.
Manchester United had the upper-hand for most of the first half, but on the verge of half-time goalkeeper David de Gea gifted Chelsea a way back into the game. Antonio Rudiger fired a shot from distance, which the Spaniard spilled, allowing Marcos Alonso to pounce on the rebound and level things up.
Manchester United pressed in search of a winner in the second period, but Chelsea, who seemed to be happy to settle for a draw, held firm to take away a point from a tricky fixture against a direct rival. The result means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain three points off of fourth-placed Chelsea and one below Arsenal in fifth, with two games left to be played.
Naturally the Manchester United fans were not happy with the result and took to Twitter to make their feelings known;

We have become everything we used to make fun of:
• Changing managers like Chelsea
• Spending money like Manchester City
• Aiming for the fourth spot like Arsenal
• Talking about history like Liverpool. It’s so sad to see such great club going down like this.

Fewest clean sheets at home in the Premier League so far this season:
• Southampton (3)
• West Ham (3)
• Fulham (3)
• Huddersfield (3)
• Man Utd (2)United are relegation-worthy at the back. ? pic.twitter.com/n8SgykTK5I

Goodbye champions league.

We are gonna bottle that anyway.
We are the bottlers of the league we had 4 games where we dropped points prior to today. Wolves, arsenal, city and some other club.
Embarrassing.

David de Gea’s performance drew ire from some supporters, with many calling for Sergio Romero to start the next couple of matches. There were a lot of fans who sympathized with the Spaniard and opined that Solskjaer should keep faith in him.
@D_DeGea has been a great servant over the years for @ManUtd. But it’s time Ole drops him. Howlers aside, the guy can’t save a shot that ain’t straight to him. #DropDDG

#mufc degea might have saved us countless times before, but that’s not disregarding the fact that, he really screwed us this season big time
— Paddy Yomie (@yomgeezy) April 28, 2019
The best thing to do is to keep DeGea on the bench for the rest of the season.

Think we should leave De Gea out of the next two games

De gea needs to get away till next season and come back fresh. This toxic mediocre squad has clearly affected his head. Still the best player in this team by far. #MUNCHE

De Gea needs a rest. I’d give him an early holiday. Allow Romero to finish the remainder of our games.
It’s been a shit season and pointing fingers to our best player over the last 6 seasons isn’t cool#MUFC#MUNCHE— Knickel Davies (@DaviesKnickel) April 28, 2019
Please fix up soon @D_DeGea. After all you’ve done for us, the least we can do is back you to get back to the level you can be at. Some of the criticism is fair and you have to take it up your chin, but you’ve risen above difficult challenges before. Let’s do it again! ?? pic.twitter.com/bebMpRkbXS

Out of all De Gea’s blunders this was the one that cost us most … #MUFC

If you think that I’ll forget what this man has done for us in the last 4-5 seasons just because he’s out of form for one season, you’re wrong. Keep your head up champion, WE are with you @D_DeGea ❤️ pic.twitter.com/qZF75ErXIj

De Gea has been United top player for the past 4 seasons or so, but let’s call a spade a spade his error has dented United any hope of finishing in the top 4. #MUNCHE #MUFC
