Kevin Campbell has questioned Liverpool for delaying Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal, suggesting they should have refreshed terms with him six months ago.

Mohamed Salah has come into the spotlight of every media outlet for his thrilling performances this season. In just 12 games across competitions, the Egyptian wing-wizard has scored 15 goals and provided five assists. Those staggering numbers have prompted several pundits to tip him to win the Ballon d’Or.

The Liverpool talisman was in inspiring form against Manchester United last weekend, scoring a hat-trick at Old Trafford and thereby becoming the first opposition player in the Premier League era to achieve the feat. His goals have helped Liverpool keep pressure on Chelsea in the Premier League while topping their tough Champions League group.

While Liverpool fans rejoice in the Egyptian’s performance, they are also a bit nervy that his contractual situation remains unsolved. Salah will enter the final year of his ongoing contract next season, and talks have been underway regarding a new contract. Salah and his representatives are reportedly demanding a wage package of £500,000-a-week,

Danny Mills recently suggested Liverpool pay up the forward and renew terms with him for the long-term future. The Reds have shown reluctance in meeting the player’s demands so far, although they might resolve the issue soon. Salah himself reiterated his commitment, stating that he would happily spend the rest of his career at Merseyside.

Kevin Campbell has now come out and slammed Liverpool for delaying the contract renewal. The former Arsenal and Everton striker told Football Insider that Liverpool could and should have signed him up six months ago for a lower wage package when the forward was not in the form he currently is in.

Campbell said, “There will be an uproar if they don’t get this sorted. Liverpool needs to get it done. They should have been more proactive. This contract could have been sorted six months ago. It could have been sorted when Salah wasn’t regarded as the best player in the world. He should have been signed on a new deal long ago.”

“Now, it seems like every week he is piling numbers and zeros onto what that contract might be. He’s been that good this season. He’s been unstoppable. The powers that be at Liverpool need to be careful because he is that important to them. Just get him signed. Do the deal.”

Going by Salah’s form at the onset of the 2021/22 season, there ought to be no hesitancy on Liverpool’s part to tie him down to a bumper new contract. If they leave it too late, prospective suitors could well emerge in pursuit of the Reds’ talisman, which would then put them in a spot of bother.
